My dad has just purchased one of these recorders and plans to backup his old vhs tapes onto dvd. Does anyone know if this will be straight forward on this dvd recorder? Also is it best to transfer the vhs to the hdd then onto a dvd or straight to dvd.

Should be easy enough - just stick a SCART cable from the VHS into the DVD recorder, play the tape, toggle through your A/V channel options on the DVD remote control till the VHS picture appears on the screen and record - I always record straight to disc rather than HDD as this saves the image going through the system twice and running the risk of extra compression. Hope this helps.

For some reason, when I'm copying from VHS to DVD (not on the same machine as yours) I have to connect up to the red, yellow and white input sockets at the front of the machine. The results are fine, though.
To be on the safe side, though, once you've connected up the two machines, play the VHS tape and search through your direct input channels until you can see the picture just to be sure you're connected up properly. It is dead easy, though - you shouldn't have any problems. |

I connect the DVD Player and Freeview box to the DVD Recorder's SCART connector, via a 2 scart-1 adaptor. This doesn't cause problems unless both are switched on at the same time of course.
To connect the VCR I use the front phono sockets. This is a good arrangement as I don't have to put the DVD Recorder on to view both Freeview or DVD playback. The DVD Recorder does have to be switched on to view VHS playback however. If your VCR is mono do not connect to the same input as Freeview or DVD as performance of the latter will result in mono sound. I didn't realise this until I got a Nicam stereo tv. Copying VHS to DVD in standard SP mode (two hours per disc) gives good quality, although not as good as the original. Using EP (4hours) mode gives results comparable to VHS to VHS copies. In SLP (6hr) mode VT/live material recorded loses its gloss, resembling a good quality telerecording! |

Were possible try to use an S-VHS or S-Video lead to copy the video signal rather than the yellow lead. The S-Video lead will allow the recorder to make a component or Luminace & Chroma picture capture. To put it simple an improved picture will be gained by doing this! Watch out for macro vision on some shop purchased tapes as well!

Just to clarify, standard VCRs (i.e. most) only output a composite signal. This (with audio) can be transferred using either a Yellow/Red/White phono cable or a fully-wired SCART lead (where the VCR outputs composite via the SCART socket). An S-Video cable can only be used with VCRs specifically labelled "SVHS".
