Anybody invested in this yet?



I was under the naive impression that Freeview was to incorporate HD broadcasts. But I now find that it can't (or is very limited) and I instead need a sat dish.



I can't have a dish attached to my flat due to planning regulations. Virgin Media (cable) are being touted by the BBC as an alternative, but as far as I have read they do not have any immediate HD plans.

Yes it's a bloody disgrace. I can get freeview but have been told that HD will not be for a few years. One can have BT vision installed but even the BBC content is now to be charged for. Why is it that cable companies won't invest in cable laying to the extent they do in the states? "Moneygrubber Murdoch" must be greasing some well known palms to have the market share of the media he has, and what he has got churns out pap, poo, and other rubbish.

I live in a part of the country which can not received Freeview by the terrestrial signal. If I wish to watch programmes broadcast via Freeview I will need to install a FreeSat receiver and dish. The problem is that my landlord will not give me permission to have a dish bolted to the side of my flat. This means I'm stumped.

The poor availability of cable in this country is a disgrace, and we can't expect the situation to improve now that we've only one national cable company.

Perhaps the market is waiting for a government incentive before proceeding, but all the time Murdoch controls his mini-electorate, I can't see that happening.

I wonder how Murdoch will react when the public at large comes to realise that with a Freeview PVR, they don't have to take out a Sky sub they don't want, or stump up a tenner a month for Sky+.

The very worst thing about Sky is that you have to have "packages" that include channels you don't want. If you could go through the line up and only pick the channels you want then it may be a bit fairer.

When the analogue signal is turned off in your area, FREEVIEW will be able to offer some HD content through the ariel (which may need an upgrade) and a new HD box (+ HD ready tv...). This has been announced by the BBC.....

The back of my house faces south.



The first Sat reciever and dish I bought was off E-Bay. The day I collected it , it was pouring with rain so I propped the dish up on the back step with 2 bricks and it worked a treat.



Maybe if you have a good location south facing you may be able to view Sat TV without the dish outside.

Frank63 - To get any signal at all the dish/LNB must have a clear line of vision to the satellite, therefore to position one in the house it would have to sit at the window and from a practical point of view it would be almost impossible to line it up acurately with the satellite.



You must have been very lucky to have received a picture with your first dish since a dish has to be aligned very acurately to the satellite both vertically and horizontally and even one degree out can mean no picture or at best a very weak signal.



For people who want to try a dish in thir window I would suggest a visit to your local caravan shop and to consider buying one of the kits for caravans. Whilst I have no experience of them they obviously must have facilities incorporated either mechanically or electronically to enable them to be easily aligned when you pitch your van.

I have been considering the possibility of trying to have the freesat dish inside my flat in a space next to the French windows where the telly unit would block it from sight, but as you say the alignment has to be exact.



I never considered caravan kits though, I'll try do some research and let you all know what I find out

I got a portable kit from Lidl's a couple of years ago (about £60)

It has an audible signal meter so I can easily tune to various satellies. UK Freesat, French TV, Italian etc (even Cuba!)
