Still not 100% happy with DVD's. I was watching one I just purchased and the picture is all 'chopped up' and sometimes the picture simply freezes! Not sure how to describe it exactly. I have the video of The Runaway Bus with Frankie Howerd and bought the DVD version recently. I couldn't believe that the latter actually cut the scene with Reginald Beckwith in the phone box! Why??

You didn't buy a $25 DVD player from Future Shop like us, did you :) ? I forget what brand ours is, but we bought it because it would play UK disks, and while it does do that, it's far less tolerant of lightly damaged disks (e.g. a few fingerprints or scratches) than our Sony player.

I've also had a couple of DVDs with manufacturing faults which had to be returned, but that's two out of several hundred.

name='Wicked Lady']Either way it depends on the quality of the print it was copied from, doesn't it?

I have some hideous copies of films on DVD and some first rate ones on video. And vice versa.

Your opening point is the first step in that if the source print is bad then its going to produce a low quality DVD version

name='Chris B']You only have to look at the edge of a door frame on VHS and see it "shimmering" to see the difference between VHS and dvd, also if you project VHS it is abysmal compared with dvd, no contest in my book.

Thats due to the resolution of VHS been at a low level compared to other systems

Hi. Always interesting to hear about the good old tape days when media was protected in a high impact case, unlike DVD which can easy become U-S. Up da spout.

I have been looking through some old Betamax video off airs (recorded off TV) tapes from the early 80's and not so surprised that these well looked after Beta tapes still play perfecto. Some of the Old Boy Network recordings are perfect with only one showing a bit of age. I even find myself with a growing number of Beta VCR'S as the big has bitten again for vintage video formats.

Another family member still uses the Beta daily and its nice to enjoy the old recordings before everything had to go through a digital rework to make more money. OOPS sorry, to improve our viewing experience.

Still have some low density open reel recordings here from the 60's my father made on a B&W Sony VCR so I dont improve with keeping....

For me I rather like the old analogue look.

Super Beta was short lived sad to say but the picture was knockout when I went to a trade demo way back when.
