Maybe the disc you are trying to 'shrink' is copy protected
( I've already replied to this but the post disapeared )
Can any1 help me out here?
I downloaded a version of DVd Shrink 3 from a free, shareware site after accodenatlly erasing a previous version. However, I cannot get the discs to copy as they progress so far and then will not do the final part of the copying [after running through what's on the disc and seeming to be functioning fine].
I'm mad about it as I just don't know how to get beyond this.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

DVD Shrink is no longer being developed. Version 3.2.0.15 is the last supported version to be released. It can be downloaded for free from several websites, just Google "DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15" to find several.
DVD Shrink creates a new folder called VIDEO_TS which contains new VOB and IFO files that represent the contents of your newly-encoded DVD. You can create your new DVD by writing these files to a blank disc. You can either write this folder and files to a blank disc, or you may choose to have DVD Shrink combine these files into a single ISO file, which can then be written to your blank disc.
If I understand your question about "the last part" of the copying process, you may be referring to the process of writing the new files to a blank disc, also called 'burning' a disc. DVD Shrink does not perform this operation itself, but relies upon outside software.
Some folks use Nero to burn their discs, but you have to pay for it. A couple of freeware burners are 'DVD Decrypter' and its follow-on, 'ImgBurn'. I myself use ImgBurn, a really great burning tool. Version 2.4.2.0 can be downloaded here. I always use "Verify" mode when writing to blank discs, as this will read-back the disc to ensure that it matches your source files. This will catch the occasional duff disc that cannot reliably record your DVD data.

Surely that's one of the main things DVD Shrink does is to overcome any copy protection on the disc?

I'm afraid that this is not the case. DVD Shrink is no longer being developed, so there are copy protection schemes that supercede Shrink's capabilities.
A better solution to circumventing copy protection schemes is to use a tool that is continually updated to get around the latest schemes. I use DVDFab Decrypter for that purpose.
Tools such as DVDFab will read your DVD, remove the copy protection, and write the 'clean' VOB and IFO files to a VIDEO_TS folder on your hard disk. At that point, you can use DVD Shrink to 'Open Files' and read these 'clean' files. DVD Shrink can then be used to transcode (i.e. 'shrink' the files so that they fit onto a single-layer disc). Once transcoded, the 'shrunk' files (as either an ISO file or in a VIDEO_TS folder) can be burned to a blank disc using ImgBurn or similar tool.

OK, I didn't realise that. I must have been lucky because all of the DVD's I have put through DVD Shrink have been fine. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for all the info. I will try it out and see what transpires.
there are so many problems that it can be that it is hard to tell. I would first try to google exactly what the failure says. DVD shrink works for me almost 98% of the time. My biggest problems to date have been with the blank DVD media I am using. I have a NEC 6500A dvd drive on my laptop. It makes excellent burns but is extremely media picky. It prefers certain brands and lately I can only use Maxell DVD-R 8x. They work perfect. If you are having trouble ripping the dvd, and getting redundancy errors then it doesn't like the starting disk either. My burner will accept to rip and also burn to the Maxell DVDs. More information would be helpful. I use DVD shrink 3.2 when I do digital burns. Yes, and you do have to have NERO running in the backround.
