But surely any 'turds' it leaves behind must be in registry, Ja?

Of course you could do a full system rebuild from the original installation DVDs. But is it worth it as you'd then have to install all the applications and documents that you want.

The page about DVD Decrypter says that it's freeware. People shouldn't make a charge for freeware

I know this is a technical question that is being dealt with here and I am a lifelong technophobe who wouldn't have a clue how to copy a DVD nor would it occur to me to want to but I am confused as to the legality of copying discs as it seems it is done as a matter of course and no one seems to question the seemingly every day practice of finding code breaking software etc to enable copying of discs which are supposedly protected from copying. At the beginning of many DVD films it points out that illegal copying is theft so am I being silly to feel uncomfortable that copying DVD movies is seemingly casually endorsed here or have I got it all wrong (and that is not a rhetorical question!) and am I simply not up with the normally accepted practice amongst the computer literate? is it okay to copy DVDs for your own use and to pass them around your friends and family but not okay to try and sell them on ebay? Just wondered what the situation was on that as it seems DVD manufacturers are constantly inventing new codes to prevent copying and consumers are constantly finding new ways to break them, a bit like a cat and mouse game but I can't help feeling that it is corporations like Sony who are loosing out and many would perhaps celebrate that fact, but what is the copyright issue on copying encripted DVDs?

I think the original DVD Decrypter ceased some time ago and it's now DVDFab Decrypter.

Provisions in copyright law make it perfectly legal to make backup copies for yourself. Copyright law really covers supplying/distribution, despite whatever warnings they stick on your DVD.

My reading is that it applies specifically to computer games only. Changes in the law in 2004 seem to contradict themselves - it was both legal for buyers to make a backup of computer games for their own use and illegal for them to hack any protection!

That is not the case in the UK. Uk copyright laws say that is is illegal to make copies of CDs DVDs and Videos even for your own personnal use. People who make illegal copies can be pursued by the law, film companies are lobbying through test court cases to have the law changed to make it easier to pursue and sue software companies who provide consumers with the means to crack encription codes that are present on DVD releases. At the moment a loophole in the law allows software companise to provide consumers with the means to break the law but that is a situation that could soon change.

here in canada laws are somewhat lax on dvd copying. if you make coppies for your own use, their is no laws preventing you, but, when you make coppies to distribute for your own profit, you are now breaking copyright laws.
