The trailer looks intriguing ... thanks for sharing. Will be looking at this film with interest (while still holding on to my copy of the TV version!).

I'm disappointed to see that the release date is now February.

Thanks for that, I had no idea that this was being done. A pleasant surprise. Production looks decent...or at least the trailer was well put together It's right up my street so it will be something that I definitely go to see.

The Review Show ... The Woman in Black
    BBC2 ... Friday 3rd February 2012 ... 11.00-11.50pm

Kirsty Wark talks to Daniel Radcliffe about, and her panel review, the film adaptation of Susan Hill's bestselling ghost story The Woman in Black ... which goes on general release from 10th February 2012. This new Hammer film adaptation will do extremely well to even just match the unsurpassed Susan Hill/Nigel Kneale classic 1989 ITV television film version.

Looking forward to it but,as already stated,it will do extremely well to live up to the 1989 BBC version.

The 1989 TV version was made by Granada TV not the BBC

Myt one big fear for the big screen version is that it will be a triumph of budget and cgi over imagination. The limited resources used in the '89 version worked in its favour. I'm relieved that there is a short running time (95 mins) for the new one. Tomorrow will tell.

    Caught the afternoon showing.

The film did generate a genuine frisson despite having read the book/seen then play/TV movie. Like the previous incarnations Jane Goldman's script has altered the original script so it has a real life of its own and the film works on its own terms. There were a couple of jump out of your seat moments, maybe not enough, the film does carry an eerie charge. Ciaran Hinds is particularly good, as is Janet McTeer.

Thanks for the info,I read the supplement in the independant (or observer?) which had an interview with Susan Hill and Jane Goldman whuch suggested that artistic license had been used with regards to the original plot, which makes a mockery of Hills boycott of the excellent BBC-sorry,ITV version (I watched it in '89 and have the Canadian dvd copy so can be excused for my mistake-(I should look things up on internet before posting!) so my opinion that Hills dislike was down to royalties rather than faithfulness seems correct!
I'm watching the latest version next Friday and am looking forward to it immensely!

The Telegraph review pays proper tribute to the TV version

Sounds like it doesn't it? I mean, how can Hill legitimately object to changes in the TV version, then approve of even more changes to this cinema version?

    Smacks of hypocrisy doesn't it?

I wonder who now owns the rights to the 1989 TV version?

The rights are allegedly wallowing in T.V Hell, hence the no show of an official DVD release. It would be nice if someone would bother unravelling it all to get a double-bill release with the new film. Very much doubt it though, more's the pity...

I think it would sell well, but I have a feeling that someone in the background is chucking spanners in the works .............

Quite plausible. But in doing so they are only adding to the cult reputation of the TV version and helping the bootleggers
