I think Mendes would do fine. The real key is getting a good screenplay, which was the big problem with "Quantum" imo.
Sam Mendes in talks to direct next Bond movie

The British director is in talks to direct the 23rd film in the venerable James Bond spy movie franchise. Production could begin as early as June with an eye toward a 2011 release date.
Daniel Craig will reprise his role as British secret agent 007 after winning fans playing Bond previously in "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace."
The Bond film will be Mendes' first action-heavy project, although his 2005 movie "Jarhead" was set amid the U.S.-led war in Kuwait. Mendes, the husband of actress Kate Winslet, is better known for dramas such as "Revolutionary Road" and "American Beauty," which earned him the best director Oscar.
Bond regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are writing a screenplay along with "Frost/Nixon" screenwriter Peter Morgan. Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are producing.

Brosnan's best Bond film IMHO was The World Is Not Enough which was directed by Michael Apted, a director not noted for action films. QOS was no better than an average Bond film (but nowhere near as bad as some would have us believe) because I felt the director, apart having no credentials for a film of that type, had no feel for the genre and this scuppered any chance the film had of being top quality Bond. I am hoping Mendes, a director I admire, will be able to blend the traditional Bondian elements with the 'new' interpretation of the character by Daniel Craig. He certainly has the intelligence and skill to be able to be able to achieve this.
As long as the shaky-cam fight-scenes and ridiculously shot and edited car-chases are left out.
QoS's fight scene was unfathomable at the beginning.

Still, hopefully the new Bond will be something to look forward to.![]()
I'm so bored with Bond. It's all been done already. There are Bond films with great stories, great direction, great action sequences etc etc etc.
The only new thing they could bring to the series is for Bond to get a sex change operation and start chasing men.
The most talked about thing for Bond movies these days is how they compare to the older stuff (and the majority don't compare at all) which makes me think it's about time he was pensioned off/ killed off/ locked away/ forgotten.

I think they screwed up when they started the series after a long hiatus. They should have given it a year one reboot, like was done with the new Batman series. A much younger James Bond on his first case and bring back the early, great villains in newer stories.

"Casino Royale" was an interesting "before he was really Bond" film, but I thought "Quantum" was a mess and, worst of all, absolutely charmless.
Why don't they just get Martin Campbell to do it? He's done the best two of the last twenty years...
I just hope Mendes doesn't seem as embarrassed to be making a Bond movie as Marc Forster did. A script this time would be nice too.

I'd like to see an adaptipn of COLONEL SUN and the original stories from the DAILY EXPRESS comic strip. Much better than any of the "scripts" of recent years!! I would also like to pay respects to my wonderful father who passed away on Jan 7th and who loved the old british pictures. R.I.P. dad.

Is The Sex Thief the one with Diane Keen in it?
