I suppose by now I should have stopped bothering about his name, but I haven't.

I'm guessing this new guy makes the pictures look pretty because he started out as an artist.
Actors have to change their name if there's another Equity member already called that. Steven (which is presumably his given name) would at least have been a bit different. Not much, admittedly !
That never really works very well because the Equity rules only apply to British actors working in this country and SAG rules only apply to American actors working in the States. There are lots of cases of two (or more) actors with the same name working at the same time.
Steve McQueen started off as an artist and became famous as an artist. It would then be very confusing if he then changed his name when he started making films
