I totally agree!

Such and interesting (and oddly under-appreciated) actor.

I like Downey's acting ... it has that edgy feel which should translate well to Holmes. Edginess was a characteristic of Jeremy Brett's portrayal should Downey's performance could be the one we have been waiting for ... that is, a worthy successor to Brett.

Yes, indeed. Downey is very, very good. I think he will make a really great Holmes. Not sure about Ritchie though, have not really liked any of his work so far.

Maybe Michael Winner's free.

While not a huge fan of Ritchie's films, at least this film should be quite lively. Most of Ritchie's films have a lot of energy and this, coupled with Downey Jr on board, should at least make it worth watching for Holmes fans. I am intrigued by who might be cast as Watson, as this role is often the make or break for any Holmes film. No one immediately springs to mind but the ubiquitous (on this forum anyway) Simon Russell Beale might be good.

Re Michael Winner ... 35 years ago I reckon he would have been able to turn out a decent Holmes film.

I was actually lucky enough to meet Michael Winner twice and found him to be a thoroughly nice chap. But to be brutal, I don't know if I'd ever want him directing my film. Mind you I'd say the same about Guy Ritchie. And Ron Howard for that matter (how did he make the whole Apollo 13 story so dull?)

I thought Apollo 13 was really exciting.

Really? I actually thought I was going to pass out from boredom.

It was all so....I'm starting to channel Vivian from the The Young Ones here.....bleeding NICE.

This is probably a rant for another thread, but I find Ron Howard, as a director, to be a Dementor. Except instead of joy, he sucks excitment and originality out of a story and reduces everything to a watery, lukewarm porridge. He is the mediocrity we must guard ourselves against so it never becomes acceptable.

I don't generally like RHs films but I thought that one was good. However, I am one of the few people who enjoyed The Da Vinci Code, even after reading the book. I thought it was a rattling good yarn.

I don't say his films aren't watchable. They are competently put together, he invariably has a top-class A Grade cast (or Tom Cruise, depending how your luck's running), and he has all the best cinematographers and such. But I always leave his films feeling cheated. Like I was promised a date with Johnny Depp and Peter Andre showed up instead.

I agree,Bats - it is a film I never tire of watching. Likewise my brother, who if he thought it was dull, wouldn't watch it. Excellent film, and despite knowing the outcome, still a tense end.

That's a fabulous idea....now that duo I would pay to see, whoever directs...

Default Ritchie on Sherlock Holmes

Author: Clint Morris Date: Sunday, July 27th, 2008 Time: 6:19 pm

Moviehole caught up with filmmaker Guy Ritchie at Comic Con this weekend and asked him a bit about his forthcoming “Sherlock Holmes” flick (the full interview will be up shortly).
Are audiences harder to surprise with twists and turns?
I think it depends on what genre I’m going into. The movie after this, we’re doing Sherlock Holmes and that is clearly going to be in a different genre, right? So I think people would expect something very different and hopefully a flavor of what it is they are familiar with. This was clear in the fact that it did what it said on the tin. I was interested in this genre that people are familiar with and as I say, I hope it’s got enough stuff in it, new nutrition, to inspire an audience.
Does it keep people guessing?
Oh no, no, I’ve been ambitious with how the plots interweave. The hard work is actually writing the thing. Shooting it is comparatively easy.
How different is your Sherlock?
It’s going to be very contemporary. I mean, I suppose originally Sherlock Holmes was this intellectual action man and I think what happened was they played down the action man aspect because they just didn’t have the means of executing the action in interesting ways. Well, we do have the means and we have the technology so we’re just riding on the back of that.
Contemporary like now?
No, it still remains in its period but we like the idea that he’s an intellectual action guy to a degree.
Is there a race against Sacha Baron Cohen’s Sherlock?
I don’t even have a script yet so we’re hoping not.
Still London?
Yeah.
