Default So Well Remembered

Hello
I could have put this message on the John Mills discussion elsewhere on the board but it is a 'new release'. I heard on the radio yesterday that the film 'So Well Remembered' starring John Mills, Trevor Howard and Patricia Roc, made in 1946 which was never originally released and was then lost, has been found in Tennessee, and because it was shot in Macclesfield, someone in Macclesfield has made it available on Video and DVD. Check it out on www.macc.me.uk
The title is ironic given that it was never released. Of course it may not be a good film and who knows about the picture quality? But I'm going to send for it.

I just checked this out in my 1947 Film Review annual. According to that, it was generally released in the UK on August 25th, 1947 and the distributor is given as RKO Radio - J Arthur Rank. Also, according to my programme records, it was shown here in Stoke-on-Trent for six days at the Odeon, Hanley, on Monday, August 11th, 1947.

This was one of three Edward Dmytryk films made in the UK. They were 'buried' after the HUAC meetings began in the late 40s and Dmytryk was jailed as part of the Hollywood Ten. After Dmytryk changed his mind to get his career back, by ending other peoples careers, any revival in the films he made with other blacklisted members (such as So Well Remembered) became very unlikely.

By coincidence I was researching these three films with consideration of trying to release them on DVD. One is available in the states "Give Us This Day" (as "Christ in Concrete")on region0 from Allday Entertainment, the other is "Obsession". I can only find these latter two films on the bbfc website. So Well Remembered does not appear it all. This may mean it had a diffeent title at one time (its UK premiere in London in July, 1947, could not have taken place without a certificate).

Very interesting, thanks for the info on "So Well Remembered". It doesn't appear in David Quinlan's normally very comprehensive British Sound Films book - unless under another name.

Odd, it doesn't appear in the BBFC database either.

But it's in the IMDb.

According to the 1947 Odeon, Hanley, advert, it was given an "A" certificate.

The BBFC database fox's me. You give it no end of imfo and it still comes back unknown.

I've also found it's not very efficient, Hackett. One thing I've found, though, is that when you're searching for a title with the word "The" on the beginning, such as The Moonraker, leave off the "The", otherwise nothing comes up.

I've had a good search through it this morning and another thing I've noticed is that many fims that were only allowed a certificate if certain cuts were made in them, are missing any details of what the cuts consisted off. It appears that the information was never kept. Surely, they should have kept log books with details of each film submitted to the BBFC and what cuts, if any, were made in them and why.

They probably do still have that information, but haven't put it online yet. I've seen various references to what was needed to be cut in some film books. It's not easy to computerise records from the last 100 years (or however long they've been going).

I'd rather they got the basic information on there first.

Point taken, Steve. It's also probably why there are so many films missing on there (including So Well Remembered).

"SO WELL REMEMBERED" missing? They probably just forgot it.

Another link on "So Well Remembered"

I've now got the DVD of the film and watched it, and it's well worth seeing. Great performances from John Mills (as you'd expect) and particularly Trevor Howard as the doctor slipping into alcoholism.
