Default New Sherlock Holmes Projects

A little off-topic, as it's TV and not film, but I'm sure a lot of us on this board are Holmes fans:

Here’s a link to a story in today’s Independent newspaper about the BBC’s upcoming Sherlock Holmes adaptation starring Rupert Everett as Holmes and Ian Hart as Watson.

http://news.independent.co.uk/media/story....sp?story=593570

Am I the only person who didn’t mind the BBC’s last attempt, The Hound of the Baskervilles, with Hart as Watson and Richard Roxbugh as Holmes?

Perhaps the main problem was the choice of the overrated and over-familiar HOTB for filming, but the rethinking of the Holmes/Watson relationship was fascinating.

If the focus of these adaptations (more would be welcome) is going to be Watson, perhaps they could choose a different Holmes each time, as a self-centred genius like Holmes would be essentially unknowable, even to his closest associates, displaying different aspects of his personality in each story.

Just a thought. Does anyone know how the Stephen Fry version is progressing? His diet to emulate the stick-like Holmsian physique certainly isn’t going well, if recent appearances on QI are anything to go by.

The BBC film was up to their usual production values but if I'm honest I think Richard E Grant stole the show and I'm struggling to put a face to the actor who portrayed Holmes.

In fact, Grant would be a more suitable cocaine-shooting suave Holmes thumbs_u

Roxborough, who played Holmes was not my choice of our hero as I've always imagined Holmes rather thin and wirey; Roxborough, on the other hand was thick set and strong looking. However, I still enjoyed the show. Ian Hart was very good as well - a bit more serious than other Watsons. thumbs_u

At first when I heard Rupert Everett was to play Holmes I was shocked, but he's a fine actor who wastes his time on rubbish (usually) and I actually think he's sufficiently patrician and urbane to make a good Holmes. The previews I've read have been positive too, even about the fact its not an original Holmes story.

Not a bad attempt by Rupert Everett. It took some time to adjust to him in the role but I gradually accepted it and thought he did a fine job in portraying a different kind of Holmes, more the narcissistic loner.
