Default Sacha Baron Cohen is Sherlock Holmes

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sacha Baron Cohen will star as detective Sherlock Holmes and Will Ferrell as his loyal assistant, Watson, in an upcoming film comedy inspired by tales of the fictional English sleuth, Columbia Pictures said on Wednesday. Cohen, 36, and Ferrell, 40, last appeared together in the 2006 auto racing spoof "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," with Ferrell in the title role and Cohen playing his rival, a French speed racer.

I'm not duly fussed. It's probably going to be similar to Without a Clue and not a film for Holmesian aficionados. I just hope Ferrall plays it deadpan as he did so successfully in Anchorman.

This isn't the 'all-action Holmes' film announced a while ago it it? I thought that was going to be a staright drama, not a spoof.

I wish I had claws.

Nope, there's two on the way. It's like waiting for a bus.

Ta.

Without a Clue was a laugh so it may be worth a look ... as a Holmes-buff I'm more concerned that they'll mess up the 'straight' version.

I wish I had claws.

There's an article about the two films on the Ritchie thread.

Oh Gawd! I sometimes wonder whether I've wandered into a parallel universe.

Please say it isn't so?

there's not a lot you can do with a holmes spoof other than reverse the roles of holmes and watson which has already done before in 'without a clue'

''no diggin'!!!!!!''

Time travel - Return of Sherlock Holmes/Sherlock Holmes Returns
Holmes is really old - Masks of Death/The Golden Years
Holmes as a boy - Young Sherlock/Young Sherlock Holmes
Holmes as a dynamic young man - Case of Evil
Holmes is in love - Sherlock Holmes Master Detective/In New York

I thought Cohen was very good in Sweeney Todd - I wonder what Tim Burton would do with Sherlock Holmes if he got the chance.

What other twists can they do with the story of Holmes and Watson - they've all been done?

Apparently SBC has been described by some Hollywood executives as the new Peter Sellars.

Impossible!

I like SBC but to compare him with a legend like Sellers It's like chalk and cheese. Hollywood executives must have compared Steve Martin to the legend that is Sellers, to have him playing Clouseau and to watch it fail miserably says an awful lot. SBC will have his day but alas may never match an immortal of British cinema.
