James Purefoy Has a V For Vendetta
Source: The Hollywood Reporter February 18, 2005

James Purefoy will star opposite Natalie Portman in V For Vendetta, an adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novels that Joel Silver and the Wachowski brothers are producing for Warner Bros. Pictures.

V For Vendetta takes place in a totalitarian England following a devastating war that changed the face of the planet. In a world without political freedom, personal freedom and precious little faith in anything comes a mysterious man in a white porcelain mask who fights political oppressors through terrorism and seemingly absurd acts.

Andy and Larry Wachowski wrote the screenplay, which is based on the 10-issue series by Moore and illustrator David Lloyd. James McTeigue, who was the first assistant director on the Wachowskis' "Matrix" trilogy, is directing. Filming is scheduled to take place in Berlin beginning in early March for a November 4 release.

Stephen Rea Aboard V For Vendetta
Source: Warner Bros. Pictures March 4, 2005

Stephen Rea (Interview With the Vampire, The Crying Game) has joined Natalie Portman and James Purefoy in the action thriller V For Vendetta, which has launched production in Berlin, Germany.

Produced by Joel Silver, Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, V For Vendetta is directed by James McTeigue, who served as the First Assistant Director on the Wachowski brothers' "Matrix" trilogy.

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante (Purefoy) known only as "V." Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V's mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself -- and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

The screenplay by Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski is based on the acclaimed graphic novel "V For Vendetta" by Alan Moore ("The Watchmen," "From Hell") and illustrator David Lloyd. Originally published by DC Comics as a ten-part series in 1988, "V For Vendetta" has been praised for its vision, potency and eloquence. Moore is widely considered to be one of the finest comic writers of all time, and has been credited with single-handedly expanding the potential of the comic book medium with his work.

A UK-German co-production between Warner Bros. Productions Ltd. and Funfte Babelsberg Film GmbH, V For Vendetta will be filmed on location in Berlin and London. V For Vendetta is supported by the local subsidy fund Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

V For Vendetta will be released on November 4, 2005, by Warner Bros. Pictures.

V for Vendetta is absolutely the best comic series I've ever read (which probably isn't saying much, but it is absolutely wonderful).

Naturally, this makes me nervous at the thought of filmmakers getting hold of it, but anything's possible, so I'll keep an open mind. If it's still in print, you should run to your local comic shop to buy the collected version.

Weaving explains his Vendetta
Posted on Thr, 9-Jun-2005

We visited the London set of "V for Vendetta" last week, so you can expect this and more in the coming months, but meantime star Hugo Weaving caught up with The Herald Sun to discuss why James Purefoy was shown the door from the production and the Aussie replacement was given his keys.

"It just wasn't working out with him and the directors", says Weaving. "It was a kind of mutual thing, I think. In a way it was quite lucky for them that Eucalyptus had fallen through because I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise".

When "Eucalyptus" was canned, Weaving was one of the few actors who spoke out about the reasons behind it's collapse - seemingly pointing the finger at Russell Crowe. He was asked if that was a misinterpretation.

"I meant precisely what I said. I just wanted to say how good the script was and that was a commonly held view. I just wanted to right what I thought was the imbalance".

V For Vendetta film bosses have denied the terrorism themed movie is being delayed because of London's recent bomb attacks - they insist technical difficulties are responsible for the date change. The film stars Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving against the terrifying backdrop of bombings on the London underground, but producers are refusing to re-edit the scenes which closely mimic recent murderous events in the city. The movie release date has been moved from November until next year. A Warner Brothers source explains, "The film is still in post-production and the visual effects wouldn't be completed in time. That's why it's being postponed. There might also be some extra shooting days but none of the scenes involving the Underground are being altered."

I've never liked 'V for Vendetta', though I love some of Moore's later work. I've never liked a film by the Wachowski brothers either. I doubt I'll see this, but I am interested in seeing the effect it has on viewers and on politicians, in the current climate. It has suddenly become much more important.

It sounds very much like a documentary on Britain in 2005!
