Google alert received that Gillies MacKinnon will direct "The Snow Goose" starring Jenny Agutter, Olivier Martinez, Emily Blunt and Billy Connolly as reported in Variety [USA]. I wasn't signing up for a subscription for the whole report but I'm sure it'll be reported this side of the pond very shortly.

Would this be the same Snow Goose that Spike Millian recorded by Paul Gallico (I think that's the name) some years ago? Milligan related the story over sound effects. It was some time ago that I heard it; perhaps 30 years or more.

Perhaps the forum might know?

Good morning boys.

Wow, I'm really excited about this film! Especially because Billy Connelly is going to play Rhayader! I'm a big fan of this book. It's enspired me for a long time. I'm a (film)composer and I said to myself, someday I'm going to write a symphony or a symphonic poem about The Snowgoose and that's what I'm doing right now. I've been commissioned by a orchestra to write +_10min piece for them. Of course 10min isn't nearly enough time to tell such a great and deep story so it'll be a prelude.

I'm very glad to hear this news. I'm looking forward to seeing this film! I'm sure it'll be great!

Cheers,

I sincerely hope you're right but it has a lot to live up to. The 1970 version is the most moving film I've ever seen.

What do you think of Camel's version of The Snow Goose?

Looks like a French/Belgium made-for-tv co-production.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen the 70s version yet. But I'll definitely will have to check it out! I'm a big fan of Camel. Their album was why I became interested in The Snowgoose in the first place and it has really inspired me. My orchestral work isn't going to be anything like they did. I'm more into contemporary writing for this one but it seems to fit the desolate atmosphere. But anyway, got alot of albums by Camel. I play guitar myself and really got into music by playing along with Andrew Latimer's guitarwork... haha :-) among others though...

So, how are your projects going since you're a actrice. :-) Anyway cool going on? haha :-)

Cheers,

He proved very well that he could do that in Mrs Brown.

I'm sad to say that I've never seen The Snow Goose. It's just appalling that such a classic hasn't been released commercially. I'll just have to content myself with the DVD of The Railway Children, which is on its way from Blighty to Oz as I write.

Thanks very much, Fell.

I initially thought that maybe the reason The Snow Goose hasn't been released on video or DVD is because it was made for TV but, for example, I've just ordered Cathy Come Home on DVD which was also made for TV.

I'm itching to see what Richard Harris is like in this (sorry, Fell, JA doesn't do anything for me, but she was and is beautiful).

Both give excellent performances.

That's ok - it would be a dull, old world if everyone held the same view.

Oh my god, what a beautiful, beautiful film! Its stark simplicity is breathtaking. I agree with you Fell, it's the most moving film I've ever seen too. (It brought to mind another favourite, although not with nearly the same impact, Laughterhouse, with Ian Holm and many geese.)

I must admit that I was a bit sceptical about the involvement of Richard Harris in this film (I haven't read the book, so I didn't know the story). But I now couldn't really imagine anyone else playing the role. Harris was quoted in the biography by Michael Feeney Callan (Sex, Death & the Movies):

"I knew that little book as a wonderful, delicate parable, like something by Laurie Lee. I had the greatest love for it, and, when I read the script, the literary part of me caught fire."

Jenny was mesmerising too! I cried with her at the end.

Another big thank you, Fell, for giving me the opportunity to see it.

Not sure about Billy Connolly...maybe. I think he has the capacity to bring the required sensitivity to such a role, providing there's a firm directorial hand to deter overplaying it.
