I could hear the above two themes all bloody day and not recognise them....but give me the theme from "Zulu" or almost any of the themes in either "Goldfinger", "You Only live Twice", or "Midnight Cowboy".....add to that "OHMSS", "Quiller M.", or "Ipcress F.", or plain old "Born Free"...even his TV advert music still evokes the advert in my mind...(Sunsilk since you ask) "Out of Africa"?....ha!.. put that on at a party and no-one would notice...but put on "Zulu" and watch 'em go...stomping around the room, singing "Men of Harlech", quoting Michael Caine (inevitably wrongly).."Zulus....fahsends of 'em" Barry J. may not be the best, he may even sometimes have composed a lot of twaddle, but to recieve all his highest accolades for these two scores seems illogical somehow... Threep. |

Also an opportune moment for a re-run (not remake) of "The Protectors", so that Robert Vaughn can regain some credibility after that bloody awful recent British TV pile of kack "Hustle", which has got to be one of the most ludicrous and unconvincing offerings we've seen over the past 20 years! Just my humble opinion of course, but the plots were ridiculous, and the acting was so wooden you could paint your telly with Ronseal when it was on !

Rumoured that the camera's will finally roll on this before the end of the year. Must have had an increase in budget as rather than Coogan/Still it's thought to be Grant/Clooney.

I think I ran a thread on this a while back and suggested these two - pleeeeeease let it be them instead of Coogan and Stiller - that would be disasterous. |

Seems odd to be making a film out of "The Persuaders" It was not particulary well received in its day and certainly didn't achieve high audience figures especially in the US where I beleive it completely bombed. Does anyone remember "The Avengers" film with Ralph Fiennes? That was truly awful but an eagerly anticipated film at the time because of the success of the TV series, and it looked good on paper, Uma as Emma Peel and Sean Connery as a villain. Michael Caine turned down the part Connery accepted and on seeing the finished film Caine was reported to have commented " thank god!"on his decision to decline the role. A Starsky and Hutch movie seemed like a good idea, again because the TV series was succesful and well remembered, but to do a complete piss take which was not that kind towards the original stars, well..... its not how I like to remember the crime fighting duo. I actually quite liked The Persuaders and Tony Curtis is pretty good in it, its a complete fantasy land even by 1970's standards and its entertaining to watch today for the nostalgia value and for the motors and the "dolly birds" etc,and the amusing sexist attitudes of the sleazy aging stars hitting on teenage girls, very funny. Just cant see how all that would translate into a modern film and for Gods sake please please, not Hugh Grant! the guy is a charmless plank, if George Clooney has the sense that I know he has he will sureley vetoe any notion of appearing oppsoite Grant... he will won't he?

I liked the Persuaders and think the theme tune is excellent and less of its time than many other early 70s themes. I vividly remember the title sequence and also watching it regularly - I didn't realize it was so unsuccessful. This is my prediction: The remake will be made, panned, and forgotten. Here is my second: The Prisoner will be remade, panned and forgotten. And Macgoohan will have a cameo, to show the director knows 'respect'. 3rd: If slightly more ineterest is shown for Jason King, that too will be made, panned and forgotten. 4th: There will be a live action film of the Jetsons. (That was supposed to be a joke, but I just Googled to make sure, and guess what ...) 5th: you get the idea. Hollywood will not learn this lesson. Anything you remember fondly from your youth ... somebody's working on a treatment now. That's the culture we live in. As long as the originals still exist, they will cast shadows too long for (a) Hollywood to ignore (b) Hollywood to affect much. Last edited by Rowdon; 29-08-2007 at 04:32 PM. |
