Or maybe, just maybe, this is a return to the wise adage "Why not remake the real stinkers? I mean - how could they get any worse?!!"

That was truly awful but an eagerly anticipated film at the time because of the success of the TV series, and it looked good on paper, Uma as Emma Peel and Sean Connery as a villain. Michael Caine turned down the part Connery accepted and on seeing the finished film Caine was reported to have commented " thank god!"on his decision to decline the role. A Starsky and Hutch movie seemed like a good idea, again because the TV series was succesful and well remembered, but to do a complete piss take which was not that kind towards the original stars, well..... its not how I like to remember the crime fighting duo. I actually quite liked The Persuaders and Tony Curtis is pretty good in it, its a complete fantasy land even by 1970's standards and its entertaining to watch today for the nostalgia value and for the motors and the "dolly birds" etc,and the amusing sexist attitudes of the sleazy aging stars hitting on teenage girls, very funny. Just cant see how all that would translate into a modern film and for Gods sake please please, not Hugh Grant! the guy is a charmless plank, if George Clooney has the sense that I know he has he will sureley vetoe any notion of appearing oppsoite Grant... he will won't he?
I have the boxset and love it - super-camp, tongue in cheek escapism, great cars, some great scenery and TC in particular is fantastic and yes he does where a lot of women's clothes. But I would like to think that GC will jump at the chance and they can try and out schmooze each other - I really think this could work with these two.

Im sure Tony would be up for a cameo appearance and that little Ferrari Dino is even more street cred now than it was then, a pristine example costs £80k plus, so maybe George Clooney driving around in that? Cool. It would be an ideal film for Clooney on a practical level, he lives full time in a villa the size of a large luxury hotel in Italy and by all accounts is living a Danny Wilde style life! As for Hugh Grant? I just hope not, sorry but I cannot fathom what his appeal is , a witless hooray henry from the 1980s in every performance he gives is not my idea of British charm personified. What about Colin Firth? I think that would be a better match, he could bring along a bit of Mr Darcy to the role of Lord Brett which would be ideal!

Steven Seagal and Ross Kemp?

Seriously, how about Clooney and Brosnan?

Bats.

Christoph, I hope against a Firth casting and would vote for only Hugh.

You see, a Firth casting would undoubtedly raise my expectations on the film's quality. A Grant casting leaves it at Rock Bottom.

And since this is a remake, and a remake of an uninteresting film at that, I really don't want to have too high of expectations. Grant would be perfect for that!

A Firth-calibre casting would also require the remake writers to do something almost unheard of: be creatively good.

That's asking WAY too much. I think the Springtime For Hitler mentality is the wise choice: select all the wrong options - how much worse can it be?

Will Cruise be allowed to kill or injure extras? I think in his next film, he's going to demand "12" as the next number so he can claim he's improving his numbers. Numerology, scientology, etc. etc.

IMDB has it down as being Hugh Grant and George Clooney look on the bright side given their love of remakes it could have been Mark Wahlberg and Jude Law....PFFFF

Tut! tut! tut!

Its getting worse by the minute. I have only just found this out today, wish I hadn't. The 70's have long gone and it was TV of the generations of the time. It was okay then but show a few episodes now and people will switch off. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. It will fail miserably.

What next, Coronation Street - The Movie.

Starring Julia Roberts as Hilda Ogden
Catherine Zeta Jones as Elsie Tanner
Johnny Vegas as Stan Ogden
Michael Douglas as Len Fairclough
Danny De Vito as Mike Baldwin
Bea Arthur as Annie Walker
Kirk Douglas as Jack Walker
Ed Asner as Albert Tatlock

Please stop all this let's see what we can resurect to make a few quid, it's bad enough they have decided to remake The Day The Earth Stood Still, a classic hailed throughout the world by movie buffs and critics alike. No more please. Long live the 70's. Try to invent something new.
