Default The dog

It's a great shame that Rick Stein's dog 'Chalky' has died. He'd have fitted the part of Guy Gibson's dog no problem. The PC brigade would have been happy and in years to come C4 could have shown the film without having to bleep out Chalky's name.

Was Gibson's dog not named Niger after the river in Africa, famed for its inky-black waters?

Yes Steve - I'm well aware of that - my tongue was firmly in cheek!!!!

I'm Irish and from time to time have encountered the words Paddy or Mick used as a term of contempt or abuse. However I would not wish to see the P or M words banned. I would never refer to people using the N word but believe they should be more resilient when confronted with bigoted language. After all, its use says more about the speaker than the listener.

Perhaps to redress any imbalance they should cast a honey-coloured Labrador in the role and call it "Honky".

It looks very good - for use in a computer game
Everything's too neat. The planes are too clean. The sky looks just like the sky on some of the better computer games.

Nitpicky, it’s a terrific taster made by a Japanese guy who makes shorts like that to show his talents (it's actually a few years old now), given a decent film budget to work with he would be able to produce some remarkable and authentic images.

Flightsimmers would sell their soul for graphics like that, even the next gen stuff currently in development which will be played for the next 5-10 years isn't on the same planet.

Still, despite the CGI technology around nowadays I wish they would leave the Dambusters movie alone.

I am a picker of nits
When I watch documentaries on the telly I often say to myself "real, real, cgi, real, cgi"

There was a good natural history one on BBC2 last night about the giant Japanese hornet. That had some good CGI in it.

I know what you mean! It really DOES look great - it's a shame the sky is no longer available for actual filming.

I'm looking forward to this film's arrival. I wonder if they'll lift the nifty cartoonish ack-ack fire or if they'll draw their own?

Yes, have you ever seen a working aircraft that clean?
(especially the close up about 2/3 of the way through)
It runs very well and smoothly on a fast connection like what I've got.
If you let it run through once it then loops and Iif you have enough room) your system would have cached it and you'll be playing it locally so it should be faster/smoother

Peter Jackson is Producing a remake. There is some debate as to whether or not the dog will be re-named for current sensitivities!

Hollywood would Americanise it without a doubt... like they did with that Submarine crew... what was the name of that movie where the film had them as an American crew... but in history they were British?

Peter Jackson's hands are probably pretty safe. Apparently, part of the interest in remaking it is because more facts (previously kept secret) are able to be incorporated into the story now. That is a good reason for remaking... unlike most non-Brit remakes of British movies.

The original will always be the classic though
