I was rather looking forward to it.

More movie projects get scrapped than ever make it to the screen. If its scrapped then it is typical rather than unusual.

Default Gandalf as Barnes Wallis - honestly!

I couldn't find any info on Stephen Fry's web site. Also not much on Weta's site - just a short article confirming that they are involved in the project and one showing director Christian Rivers and Jackson in the cockpit of a lancaster . David Frost's web site is equally unforthcoming. Can anyone confirm that this is going ahead for next year?
Further to Peter Jackson's remake, I read in the Daily Mail (so it must be true . . ?!?) that casting has begun for the new Dambusters movie:

Playing Gibson - Scots actor James McEvoy (I think that's how you spell it)
Playing Wallis - Who else but Sir Ian McKellern ( - ditto - )

Can anyone confirm or convincingly laugh-off this report?

Ha ha
IMDb Pro doesn't list any actors as associated with it as yet
Their latest news is "31 August 2006 Optioned Property
Studios are aiming to launch production next summer"

Nothing has been heard about it since then

They've got the director as Christian Rivers (no other directorial credits) and a few people listed as producers or executive producers. But that's all
The production company behind it is Wing Nut Films of Wellington, NZ
That's Peter Jackson's production company that did the LotR trilogy and King Kong

The IMDb also collects news items, from reputable sources and even some industry gossip sheets. None of them mention James McAvoy or Ian McKellen as being connected to the Dambusters project.

Could it be that the Daily Hate Mail is just making up "news" again?

It certainly wouldn't be the first time they've done that, would it? It seems like they have an "apology" printed every other day for a "misleading" article.

Why do I buy it? Oh, yes - because all the other papers are liars too, but the Mail often gives out free DVD's (I got the Eagle has landed from them).

Well seeing as Stephen Fry has written the screenplay I hope it does happen.

Well if he does then there's a good chance that it'll be a good script. But having a good script doesn't guarantee a film will be made so I hope Stephen takes the money up front

James McAvoy would be excellent casting as Gibson....not too old but with the right sort of gravitas and charisma. Lets hope...

I forgot to add that bit about Stephen Fry . . .

Is he a good screenwriter, or something?

Default Weta workshops

Don't know if this has been posted before, but here's a link to Weta Workshop's website (special effects creators for Peter Jackson, etc) where they mention the project they are undertaking for the Dambusters movie.

Weta Workshop // Projects - Film

I also read that they are having 12 full-size (but non-flying) Lancaster replicas made in China.

I emailed them to see if there was any chance of a sneak preview - probably naive of me to ask - but they at least emailed me back, stating that this was being "kept under wraps meantime"

I think the point I'm making is that there seems too much evidence to suggest that this re-make is NOT going ahead.

Wishful thinking, perhaps, but i will keep on wishing.

Obviously not wanting to take any chances with their new construction at the Three Gorges.

Knowing the inherent quality control over there, their Lancasters will probably come with electric windows, heated rear windscreen and a decent quality CD-player, plus 3 years free servicing and a 5 year anti-corrosion warranty ..........

If they want to see a real Lancaster there is a good example in the RAF museum in Hendon down the road from me.

I read an interview with Sir David Frost in this week's Radio Times that he is working on a script with Stephen Fry to do a remake,as well as saying Peter Jackson was directing. John Lloyd who made Not The Nine O'Clock News and Spitting Image is producing it.
