Some of the effects show their age...but the central performances of Richard Todd and Michael Redgrave are unrepeatable, especially in the final sequences where they are coming to terms with the loss of their colleagues lives.
As Frostie has bought the rights to the book, he should film the rest of it...the dams raid is only the first section. What 617 Squadron achieved after Gibson left and was replaced by Leonard Cheshire - he of the homes - in terms of precision bombing was, if anything, even more remarkable. Because their Lancasters could only carry one bomb each (six-, later ten-tonners) they made certain they hit the targets; bridges, tunnels, even battleships.Their precision was remarkable dropping from high altitude. Of course they relied on flare droppers to pinpoint the targets - the Pathfinder squadrons were nowhere near good enough - so Cheshire dropped the flares himself, at low level. Anyone here fancy dive-bombing in a Lancaster??? Their ethos was to avoid innocent casualties - especially when the targets were in France, and they disliked the indiscriminate carpet bombing of much of the war.The final sequence could be Cheshire being the official RAF observer of the atom bomb drops...a different era begins, the age of heroes dies..
Being interested in the Second World War,I didn't know any of this - thanks,Penfold. Good observation and notes for the new film.

This film is one of my favourite war films.
Agreed, Todd's and Redgrave's performances are without equal.

What does Frost thing he is playing at?
Pompous ass...........
As I've said in another context - class is permanent but money talks.

Apart from anything else, David Frost has got to be the most boring person in media, so anything he gets involved with will be tired, worn out and mind-numbingly bland!

Thanks marky b - but do try and get hold of Paul Brickhill's book, The Dam Busters. It's a great read, and should be easily obtainable new or second-hand. Alternatively Cheshire VC by Russell Braddon...or Enemy Coast Ahead by Guy Gibson himself.
Incidentally Brickhill also wrote the books Reach for the Sky and The Great Escape....not a bad CV...

There is some small recompense, such as when Frosty's production company coughed up the dosh for things like FUTTOCKS END. But he's far too 'Establishment' these days. So much for the sharp-edged satirical wit. It gets to them all in the end - eventually they all become pillocks of the community.

(Stand up, Ben Elton !)

I AM SO GLAD THERE ARE SO MANY ON THIS FORUM WHO ARE AGAINST A REMAKE OF THIS MOVIE.

My immediate reaction was "this is sacrilege".

I HEREBY SWEAR I WILL NOT CROSS THE ROAD TO SEE A REMAKE OF THE DAMBUSTERS, OUT OF LOYALTY TO RICHARD TODD LET ALONE ANY OTHER REASON.

Go bite your bum, David Frost.

A thread about The Dambusters mentions an attempted remake by Mel Gibson with Liam Neeson as Barnes Wallis and Mel Gibson playing Guy Gibson.
Luckily, it seems to have collapsed as a project.
