I've just realised how these rubbish remakes get the green light and it's our fault! The studios know their classics and know these films all have a very loyal following so when they remake one all true fans say to themselves "Blimey......(PLEASE INSERT AS MANY EXPLETIVES AS YOU SEE FIT)" Their second thought is to immediately lay into it but they can't as they know they can't slag it off without having seen it first,so.....
Therefore, the answer is simple;the original is obviously the best and anybody who says otherwise should be suitably humiliated as a complete berk! (I realise there may be a little hole in this theory as,eg.THE THING,DAWN OF THE DEAD,and all those other fantastic re-imaginings are actually quite good)But apart from this mere triviality my argument is completely sound!

My missis thinks i'm mad after almost driveing her mad playing this on the dvd player, but you cannot beat this film for charm and laughter,i have always wondered if the squipt was based on fact that a school of oneupmansship had really existed back then lol.

Funny you mentioning School for Scoundrels, Jeremy Lloyd, one of the students in the film, was having lunch at the same Restaurant as I was last Sunday. Looked great for 75!! Amazing, hasn't changed much at all. Can't help thinking of him as the quintessential upper class twit in his younger days.

Seeing him in those early films, who'd have thought he'd have gone on to be such a powerful writer/producer

If there's any joy in Mudslinging-ville, you might be interested that the American remake of SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS is following up its theatrical flop with an even worse showing in DVD rentals, according to Blockbuster-USA.

Pity. I'm sure we all shed an appropriate-sized tear.

Was there a "school of oneupmansship" type comedy series with the brilliant
Richard Briers many years ago or was it a one off?

You're not thinking of The Other One with Michael Gambon and Richard Briers from 1977, are you?

"The Other One" (1977) - Full cast and crew

no Nick, that was (I believe) about travelling salesmen.
this prog had R/B as an expert in oneupmanship.

it was not a sit com it was a spoof docu. I only remember one part from it.
R/B (giving advice to someone whose friend had just bought a new car) tells him not to go out and buy a bigger car but instead to buy a pony and trap in order to stay "one up".

Been watching this BRILLIANT film yet again and only just noticed that Palfrey gets one-up on everybody except Alistair Sim's Potter and.....

...John Le Mesurier's Skinner. Is this intentional because Skinner's played so well he'd be top of my list, the GIT!!!

Surely Palfrey does get one up on Potter because he goes against Potter's teaching and is genuinely sincere.

I loved the whole film but especially Alastair's breaking of the fourth wall when he told the orchestra to stop
