Default Brideshead Revisited

Brideshead movie set to shoot this year
Teddy bears and stately homes: Brideshead set for big-screen overhaul.

Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh's classic 1945 novel, is to be adapted for the big-screen with filming due to begin this spring. Julian Jarrold has signed on to direct from a script by Andrew Davies and Jeremy Brock. The picture is being produced by HanWay Films, the independent British company behind Fast Food Nation and Brothers of the Head.

Predominantly set in the years before the second world war, Brideshead Revisited charts the decline of an aristocratic English Catholic family, as viewed through the eyes of the book's agnostic narrator, Charles Ryder. While studying at Oxford, Ryder falls under the spell of the family's decadent younger son, Sebastian Flyte, and later begins a relationship with Sebastian's sister, Julia. "With its themes of love across a religious divide, Brideshead is very relevant to our time," said Robert Bernstein, the film's producer.

Brideshead Revisited was made into a major Granada TV series back in 1981, starring Jeremy Irons as Ryder and Anthony Andrews as Flyte. Casting for the big-screen version has yet to be announced.

How very predictable... Why on earth can't people come up with something original instead of trying to better something that has already been hugely successful? Oh well, that debate is an old one.

Good luck to them with casting someone better than Anthony Andrews for Sebastian...

Thanks for the info though - but think I'll stay at home with my dvds

I agree. What is the point? Do they seriously expect to produce something that is better that the TV series.

This is a completely different version. They've already signed Sid and Nancy, and the screenplay comes from Adolf's recently-discovered third Kampf. (Bialystock & Bloom have put together the financing, I understand.)

This was first announced over three years ago, so they are certainly taking their time about it. According to what I read, Davies's adaptation was going to play down the relationship between Sebastian and Charles, and focus on the relationship with Julia.
