Sherlock set to buff up
The tumbleweeds that skid across the barren desert of Hollywood creativity showed no sign of letting up yesterday as Warner Bros announced it is reinventing Sherlock Holmes as an action hero. Neil Marshall, the highly regarded British director of The Descent, has been hired to orchestrate proceedings and transform the erudite sleuth of 221B Baker Street into something a little more rough-hewn. The story will be adapted from Lionel Wigram's upcoming graphic novel Sherlock Holmes, with the British Wigram set to produce. Studio executives are keeping mum about the storyline, although it is understood that Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary creation will rely less on tugging pensively on his pipe and employ instead his little known pugilistic skills and swordsmanship to vanquish Victorian villainy. Holmes' newfound fighting prowess alone will not be enough to overcome his foes, however. In keeping with the vague truism that behind every superhero lurks an older, often mustachioed aide, the producers are pairing up the crime-fighter with a new-look Dr Watson. Elementary, really. Marshall is likely to start work on Holmes once he has finished directing the futuristic action thriller Doomsday, about a killer plague that threatens to wipe out Hollywood remakes. We're only joking, that would be preposterous. The plague threatens to eradicate the entire human race. |

Finally! I knew Arthur Conan Doyle actually envisioned a Rocketman/TV Wrestler type of He-Man instead of that foggy character.
I hope they can find enough TV wrestlers who haven't gone too 'roid-raged out to play all the characters. The Rock as Sherlock. Maybe with his Scorpion King robes, and a Rocketman helmet and jetpack. With gloves that shoot lasers. And Dick Tracy's superwatch. We can dispense with those ridiculous thought processes - just 90 minutes of good clean over-the-rope-throwing action! And get some kung-fu wire-fights going, too. I always knew those happened on London streets! Last edited by ChristineCB; 16-03-2007 at 04:23 PM. |

No pipe, but maybe some gattling-gun type AK-47's strapped under his cape.
I've always thought Doyle probably thought of giving him Doc Octopus arms, too. I sure hope they'll give him a sequined mask. Will his car have those underbody blue-lights glowing for his gang colors? Sorry - I just can't take this whole thing seriously. Or else my stomach can't keep food down long enough to think hard about this article's implications. They really should have Sherlock piloting the lead bomber in the remake of THE DAM BUSTERS. |

In the Doyle canon Holmes does indeed have excellent boxing skills .... however, these were used only when absolutely necessary, such as in 'The Solitary Cyclist' when he gave the brute Woodley a sound thrashing ... I can't say I am thrilled by the idea of a 'superhero' style Holmes ... look what that idea did for Van Helsing !!!!

I am making fun of the concept, but you're right. The boxing prowess is certainly a attribute. although I believe Basil would have always thrashed Moriarty. Especially with sabres and a great shadowy lighting!
Will Pierce Brosnan age into a Sherlock role, I wonder? Would a leading actor ever accept such a mantle? Sean Connery? Or is this Lazenby's big chance? |

Clive Owen as Sherlock Holmes ???? hahahahahahaha ... oh dear ... sorry ... perhaps he was considered for Watson ... hahahahahahaha ..............
I liked Nicholas Rowe in Young Sherlock Holmes but that film was itself a Hollywood attempt at a kind of SFX heavy Holmes adventure and was pretty duff ... I last saw Mr Rowe in Shackleton and, with due respect, he didn't look action-hero material .... so, if he has been signed, perhaps a more faithful interpretation is on the way ... at last

What did you make of Jonathan Pryce as Sherlock with Bill Paterson as Watson?
Some crashing anachronisms in what the characters were saying, but it was a good effort, I thought (I've yet to get round to watching the final part). Nick |
