Default Keira Knightley to Become The Duchess

Keira Knightley to Become The Duchess
Source: Variety
July 30, 2007

Keira Knightley will play the 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, duchess of Devonshire, in Saul Dibb's The Duchess, co-financed by Pathe and BBC Films.

Variety says the film, set to shoot in October, is adapted from Amanda Foreman's bestselling bio of the controversial blueblood, who has been described as the Princess Diana of her time.

An ancestor of Princess Di, she lived an extravagant, profligate and promiscuous life of political and romantic intrigue, becoming an important powerbroker amid Britain's ruling elite but also running up catastrophic gambling debts. She was alternately feted and reviled, and widely caricatured by the popular press.

The movie is being produced by Michael Kuhn's Qwerty Films. The script is by Jeffrey Hatcher.

This is the era of Keira Knightley, she was placed in a lot of power related roles lately:

- the king of prirate (pirate of the carribeans)
- the bounty hunter (Domino)

and now a duchess... well that was a rise alright!

my corner of paradise ....

Default The Duchess (starring Keira Knightley)

This looks good to me, and the plot sounds like The Man in Grey slightly!

The original novel of The Man in Grey was loosely based on the Devonshire mènage-à-trois/quatre. (The Marquis in the book was not a violent man, as depicted in the film, though: the notorious ending of the film was a Gainsborough embellishment.) I wonder, though, if the new film will address the strong suspicion that the 'romantic friendship' between the two ladies was perhaps not entirely platonic by modern standards?

I never knew, silverwhistle - that would explain the similarity!

The thing that makes Lockwood's character less 'wicked' to me is the fact that Calvert's character doesn't even love her husband... perhaps if she did I might sympathise with her more.

Yup. And with the historical originals, I find Bess Foster (Hester's real life counterpart) more interesting and, indeed, more beautiful than Georgiana.

Having seen the trailer again, lots of it reminds me of TMIG.

But they're mirroring the Duchess, Keira, to Princess Di. I love Princess Di but preferred Hesther in TMIG. I'm confused.
