    William Nicholson to write '1066'

    By ALI JAAFAR

    William Nicholson

“Gladiator” scribe William Nicholson is dusting off his sword and sandals to write “1066,” about the confrontation between England’s King Harold and William, Duke of Normandy, for control of the English throne.

William’s victory at the Battle of Hastings, and the Norman takeover of England, earned him the moniker William the Conqueror. It was the last successful hostile invasion of the country.

Nicholson’s script will focus on the comradeship-turned-deadly rivalry between William and Harold, who died in the battle after being shot in the eye with an arrow.

No decisions have been made on the two lead roles or the director, although pic has been fast-tracked for production this year.

“The events of 1066 are some of the most fascinating in history, which have never been portrayed on the bigscreen before,” said Webster and Garrett, in a statement. “The scale of the piece is emblematic of Shine’s ambitions. It’s a great way to start off the relationship with New Regency. It will be a big-budget film on an epic scale.”

Mark Lester (Oliver!) is in the cast list unless it's an error.

They appear to be different films ....

Oliver's Lester To Battle Craig At The Box Office?

Daniel Craig faces a battle royal at the box office, if he signs on to play William The Conqueror in a new film - Oliver star Mark Lester will play King Harold in a rival movie.

The former child star will don the crown for a new movie, called 1066, which will also feature Alien Vs Predator star Ian Whyte. The $75 million (GBP50 million) movie will be shot in Wales next year.

The project, written by Robin Jacob and historical novelist Helen Hollick, is the culmination of over four years of historical research and script development.

Industry stunt legend Rocky Taylor, who has featured in 17 Bond movies, will take charge of the film's stunt scenes.

Craig is said to be in negotiations to play Harold's rival William in a rival epic, which will trace his life prior to his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

    from IMDb

.... in the original post it says no one has been attached to the film, but the Lester one is all set to go. Also, Nicholson is not the writer of that one.

Crumbs, they come along just like buses. One sounds like an action flick and the other more factual.

£50m budget for a film with Mark Lester in the lead .... is that a gamble or just me being cynical?

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Uj0Jiu_Jso&NR=1]YouTube - 1066 interview with Robin Jacob Pt 2[/ame]

This to camera interview/promo with director/writer Robin Jacob, from 2007? The first part deals with the writing and re-writing of the 180 odd pages of script.

I notice from IMDB, that there's a rival film in the pipeline, scripted by William Nicholson.
