The freebie that came with Daily Mail is in the ratio of 1.77.1 as I have just checked the disc and was from Studio Canal, should that be the correct OAR or 2.00.1 then ?

That ratio could be wrong ? The one I have is 1.77.1 so maybe that is wrong too!!

Anyone know which is correct ?

I didn't know it was available unleaded. Was there ever a diesel version for the more economy-minded?

I seem to recall some posters as saying that Dunkirk was in Metroscope (the film was released through MGM in the UK). Metroscope was not an anamorphic lens wide screen system, but the film frame was composed in such a way that it could be cropped in the projector gate and then the result enlarged to fit a wide screen. 2 x 1 seems a bit extreme, though and it was probably projected in cinemas at no more than 1:85:1...or more usually 1.66:1.

Dunkirk was filmed in 'Metroscope'; filmed 'flat' then matted down to 2.00:1 for projection. It was a cheap widescreen process that didn't involve expensive lenses.

If I recall correctly, the original Warner release was simply an open matte transfer, and the current Optimum transfer (and the Daily Mail freebie) has simply opened up the matte slightly from 2.00:1 to avoid thin black bars on widescreen TVs. It's a beautiful transfer by the way.

EDIT - sorry Darren, didn't see your post.

BTW, a number of sources DO say it was projected at 2.00:1, as were other Metroscope films including Libel (1959), The Day they Robbed the Bank of England (1960), Cattle King (1963), A Global Affair (1964), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Too Late the Hero (1970)

Another Metroscope release from the late 1950's was The Fastest Gun Alive. But when I went to see it in May, 1957, it definitely wasn't projected at 2 to 1, more like 1.66:1 and it looked alright to me in that aspect ratio.

I've no doubt you're right; Metroscope films obviously didn't have a fixed AR and I've no doubt that while they might have been framed for 2.00:1 they would have been protected for anything up to and including 1.66:1.

I've just checked my R1 copy of Too Late The Hero, which is 1.78:1 and preceded by a message by the AR has been 'modified to fit my screen'. The Dirty Dozen DVD/BD is however, 2.00:1.

The only problem with an Optimum DVD is having to endure the terrible discordant cacophony of that Studio Canal "drifting through the clouds" title, which we have to put up with twice before the film starts. It must be the worst DVD trade mark "music" in the business.

I have the freebee, it's 16.9 & Anamorphic! I'm very happy with it. Too many late 50's early 60's Brit. films released in 4x3 or non-anamorphic 16.9 versions.
