Oh great! I was only reading about this yesterday and it sounds excellent. Definitely one for my collection if it does come out.
It looks likely the BBC America will be releasing on Region 1 dvd this year, the fondly remembered series on the reogh of Henry VII The Shadow Of The Tower, figers and everything else crossed that this comes to fruition

Any news on a Region 2 release?

No. no news on a Region 2 release but a Regvion 1 release would be great news![]()
I would love to see this series again, James Maxwell was excellent as Henry. Incidentally, I note on the BBC America site that An Age of Kings is available on Region 1. Why not on Region 2? I watched this on Sunday afternoons when I was a lad, my first experience of Shakespeare. Absolutely brilliant, I can well remember Robert Hardy as Henry V and Paul Daneman as Richard III. Suppose I could always get a multi region DVD player.
Well. I think most of us have hacked our machines to be multi-region already. But yes, it does annoy me that BBC stuff sometimes comes out abroad first (or abroad and never here, like the VHS release of Cold Comfort Farm (1968) – released in the US, but never in any format here, or Who Pays the Ferryman? – Netherlands only!). I know the arguments about the US (especially) being a bigger market, but these are programmes funded by UK licence-payers: why can't we get first bite?
I have the 1980s BBC Shakespeare Richard III, with Ron Cook (who at least had something of a facial resemblance to the Society of Antiquaries portrait). It would be good if they did a non-Shakespeare version of him, though… It's a great play, but historically very iffy.
I'll be interested to see James Maxwell in this: rather good-looking, and a decent match as Henry. At least in those days, they used to make an effort to cast people who looked reasonably like their characters:
Death-mask of Henry VII from funeral effigy (Sadly, the effigy's body rotted due to water damage in the 1940s. There are old photos, though: the artist had made it a bit healthier-looking/less consumptive, and it was in nothing but a posing pouch… Ahem!)
Torrigiano bust of Henry
(How unlike the abomination that is the current The Tudors!)
I do regret that I'll never be able to see James Maxwell as one of my favourite literary tragic heroes, though, as the 1966 BBC2 Notre Dame serialisation, in which he played Claude, has been lost.

If you're interested in James Maxwell as Henry VII, then have you seen Tower of London: The Innocent. Link to IMDB Tower of London: The Innocent (1969) (TV) I must admit I've never heard of this before or, indeed, knew that Maxwell had played Henry before. Wouldn't mind seeing it, but doubt there's much chance of it turning up.

Ah! That must be the pilot mentioned in the blurb on BBC America! If it survives, I wonder if it might be included in the set?
The Age of Kings release is superb and well worth going multi-region for, IMO.

Missed the mention of the pilot in the blurb, shouldn't skim read! It would be good to see it if it survives as I certainly don't remember watching it when first shown.
Excellent news Shadow of the Tower is now confirmed as being released on Region 1 on the 25th Janauary next year . Hooray![]()

Fantastic news. I think the BBC said they would release it also as a double pack with The Age of Kings so hopefully that's still on the cards for those of you who need both of them.

Excellent! I do hope that's correct.
