A friend of mine - a mad Petula Clark fan - refused to buy the DD HE DVD of "The Card" because her name wasn't on the cover. In fairness, it was a bit silly not to make her a selling point (she was fourth billed on the original posters), but even sillier not to buy a good DVD print of the film!

Well, that depends. I mean, if your friend knows Petula Clark, and there was the possibility that she might come round one afternoon for a cup of tea, and then your friends comes back from the kitchen carrying the tray, only to find Ms. Clark next to the DVD rack, incandescent with fury, holding "The Card" in her trembling hand ... "YOU ... BOUGHT ... THIS ... DVD!!!" she spits, before throwing it down and storming out, leaving your friend in the doorway, shouting "Pet! Pet! It's Dundee cake!!" to the figure disappearing down the road ... in that case, I could understand not buying it. No sense in risking friends over DVDs.

And to make the whole thing even more tragic, to cheer yourself up after Miss Clark's flounce, you might well think, 'Well at least I have my Dundee cake and there's bound to be something nice on Film 4' so you'd refill the teapot, sit back with the telly on and inevitably the film would be...The Card

LOL! Yes, that film was rather more elusive when I wanted it a few years back. Then we got two DVD issues, and it became part of Film4's staple diet...

Being a Northerner, I’d settle for Eccles Cakes! And even though I think the ubiquitous ‘The Card’ is a wonderful Alec Guinness film, why doesn’t Film 4 replace it with his other entertaining film of that period ‘Last Holiday’ which never gets an airing these days (and which I foolishly threw out whilst not being of sound mind).

For Diana fans like me. I will watch a movie with her in it even if her appearance is only for a few minutes. I love her and will buy anything with her in it or on the cover.

Because the intention of the current regime at the BFI is to move into areas of British Film that are outside the recognised canon. Thus, the Adelphi films, all those on the Flipside label, and the documentary box-sets that move beyond the GPO (COI, Coal Board etc).



Personally I believe this to be a highly laudable enterprise - the films may or may not be necessarily 'good', but they are usually, at the very least, fascinating. I'll pick up these in a few months time when the price is reasonable, but my expectations won't be high - but hopefully, as with the Flipside releases Primitive London and London in the Raw, they should provide interest. If nothing else, the fact that someone is taking British popular cinema seriously is a cause for celebration.

...Because history can't be selective. Either we save our film heritage as it really was or we preserve only what we want and create a completely false history. Who's to say that future generations won't take the opposite view of what we judge to be good or bad?

I have mine on order and have always rated Maurice Elvey a a good director and I have never seen these 2 films so will be in for a good nights viewing when they arrive. I am also looking forward to The Great Game which I hope will be out this year.
