This classic British film from 1970 is due out on Region 1 in September. Let's hope it really is a restored version, as there are a number of Region 1 DVD's out there of this film that are of appalling quality that have the words "Digitally Restored" on them. Apparently, the Americans don't have the equivelent of our Trade Descriptions Act over there. If it really has been restored, let's also hope for an eventual Region 2 release.

Its not unusual for Brit stuff released in the US to be found in dubious condition .I think they look at the reel and if it says limey they roll it out and stamp all over over it and then transfer it a couple of times through NTSC to PAL and back again

I hope this is true. It is a brilliant version but both the VHS and 'restored' DVD releases used the same washed-out source with shoddy sound. I would love to see this as it originally looked.

They always manage to get beautifully clear pictures for the DVD cover, though.

Now that this DVD has been released, I thought I'd pop over to amazon.com to see what the customers who have just bought it say about it and, hmmmm I thought as much. Despite VCI proclaiming untruthfully about the film being digitally remastered and restored, this release is just as bad as all the other so called "Digitally Restored" videoes and DVD's of this film, with the print in appalling condition and the transfer very dark and indistinct. Do the Americans have no equivelant over there of our Trade Descriptions Act? Why are they allowed to lie about the quality of their product like some 19th century snake oil salesman and why do amazon continue to sell DVD's of films advertised as being remastered and restored when they're not and thus lying to their customers? As one amazon customer says: Why is it impossible to get a proper DVD of this film?

It is easy to get in the U.S. because it is in the public domain over here, so for a buk or two you can have a copy. You get what you pay for.

The problem is, Will, that amazon.com are charging $13:49 for it, reduced from around $15, as though it's worth more than all the other so called "restored" versions that you could get for $3.

Damn. How disappointing - but not unexpected.
