    [The Trials of Oscar Wilde

The NFT advertised a restored print of this a few months ago. Sadly the print they showed was the old one as the new one (from Canada? Abroad anyway) wasn't ready but it's good news that it's being improved. Though the existing print is just fine.

It's ages since I saw On The Night of The Fire (1939) starring Ralph Richardson (yet another one I once recorded but failed to keep) and I would welcome a release of it. Also Mr Richardson in Home At Seven (1952).

Perhaps we leaving out the comedian from the past might be a sin...as popular as GERT & DAISY,let's not forget REVNELL & WEST that packed the cinemas during World War 2.

One gem would be THE BALLOON GOES UP (1942)starring the couple, plus DONALD PEERS & RONALD SHINER.

We tend to forget these treasures that held the nation together during the moment of crisis.Like FRANK RANDLE and the like, stalwarts of the British cinema that entertained and kept the box office tills rattling.

    Anymore in the 1/9s.

Deadly Strangers ..this had a Spanish release a couple of years ago which had falsely claimed to contain English subs, hidden in the menus. I bought it and it doesnt! However I've always thought it was a decent little thriller and would like to improve on my crappy VHS copy, which interestingly, although cut, contains footage not in the Spanish version which in turn contains stuff not in the Canadian one.

So lets have the real one uncut and in English!

Not a film as such but i think we are long, long overdue a complete Alan Clarke boxset featuring Road, Christine, Elephant etc

Also Adrian Mole tv series should be released.

    Orpheum

I fully understand your feelings about seeing long missed films once more. For several months this year I frantically tried to find what were some old favourites for my Dad as he often asked me if I could find them for him so he could see them once more. I did get hold of a few he would have liked to see but sadly he passed away just a few weeks ago now. It hit home here how wrong it is for the old black and whites to be shut up in “the archive” as we beg them to see British greats once again. As for underneath the arches, it was a title I once had on 35mm Nitrate film in the early 80’s which I passed to “the other side”. Big mistake… I sincerely hope that the youngsters who work at the archive trip over the cans and decide to finally transfer it.

Its been great to sit here chomping at me toast and reading the lists you have all posted for films many of us hold a great affection.

Renown were going to release MADAME LOUSIE with Pet Clark but sad to say the master needs more work so this may not happen. Boo Hoo for Mr Pastry fans. Thought she was very sweet in that film and it would be nice to have this out as well.

....Though there's better news on CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, both titles are part of the 6-film 3-disc (double-sided) Region 1 set THE HAMMER HORROR SERIES (both Anamorphic widescreen, and "Not Rated" so it's the uncut version of WEREWOLF too) which is still available through Amazon for around £15...

Even better news.....Curse of The Werewolf is being released individually by Final Cut Entertainment on October 4th.

Get it here...Curse of The Werewolf

I have never heard of Final Cut Entertainment, so I hope this will be a quality release.

    Such as?

The BFI is the legal custodian of a vast number of physical prints, but my understanding is that they only own the distribution rights to a tiny, tiny fraction - and most of those are BFI Production Board titles that they funded in the first place. And gut instinct tells me that's not what you meant!

The sad fact is that the overwhelming majority (I'd say at least 75%) of British fiction features from the 1930s to the 1970s are currently owned by ITV and Studio Canal - and I believe Network and Optimum get first dibs on their respective catalogues when it comes to DVD releases.

Well, an obvious one that have the rights to and which has recently been expensively restored, but which hasn't exactly been easy to see (a friend has recently, unsuccessfully, tried to hire the restored print) is Asquith's Underground. See also Shooting Stars. Plus, Carnival which has one of Chili Bouchier's few (only?) roles as the romantic lead.

But does the BFI actually have the video distribution rights to those titles? Just because they've restored them doesn't mean they necessarily have any rights to exploit them - for instance, I know they can't put their restoration of Hammer's Dracula out on DVD/Blu-ray. And presumably Canal still owns Accident, another recent BFI restoration.

Thanks for the info. It would be nice to have a good print but I'd only watch it once, it's an awful film, sorry!

I gave the Screenonline links because they show the films' rights-holders (Canal in the case of Accident). Unless I'm drastically misunderstanding the information given on the site. (Thanks to Brief Encounter for pointing this out)

It seems the Region 2 version is coming out in a couple of weeks.

I know the films may not be difficult to find individually, but I wish there was (or has there ever been?) a box set of all the Hammer Draculas, and another of all the Hammer Frankensteins, together. With booklets.
