    DVD Review

    by Sukhdev Sandhu:

    THE WIGAN CASINO

The best British music film ever made? Tony Palmer's 1977 documentary is a fabulously evocative portrait of the legendary Northern Soul club that championed a forgotten strand of African-American soul music.

There, in a city of struggling foundries, thousands of young men and women, breaking out proto-breakdance moves, sustained by a kind of religious-revivalist joy, paved the way for today's ubiquitous club culture.

I was there time after time in the 1970's, Maurice. Motorway from Birmingham. Still have the Blues and Soul copies from those years too. Time will (not) pass us by....
