    Hey

I signed up to lovefilm when they had a promotion on ( 2 free cinema tickets ) around 3/4

    months back .

just the basic package 2 movies a month for £3.99

i found the service to be reliable , and viewed several good movies,

however when i went to try to rent the new Wolfman ,

and "the invention of lying "( with Ricky Gervais ) they are not for rent !?

you can buy them from love film but NOT rent them !

must have some wrangle with UNIVERSAL PICTURES ?

as these can be rented from Blockbusters

anyways i rang and cancellation line and stated the rental service was not

100% the lady said well you can buy them if you want

surely the likes play.com / amazon/ zavvi / etc etc if one wants to buy dvds

    anyways , a heads up

    cheers

    Rich

I was not impressed with DVD rental from LoveFilm and cancelled my subscription with them about 2 years ago.

When it had been "Amazon" film rental I'd had no problem.....

I began receiving damaged/faulty DVD's and on several occasions would be halfway (or more) through a film and it would "stick" and refuse to get past that point.... most irritating, esp if you have not the time to start a fresh film...

I know that Lovefilm say they will send out a replacement (and they did)...but its the frustration factor in that the time is effectively "wasted".....went through the usual cleaning techniques, as is normal when dealing with second hand discs but problem persisted, and I closed my account......

I was renting 6 discs a month, so probably more than average, but now I buy all my DVD's new there is no problem.

    Maybe I was just unlucky.....

have to agree Sgt Sunshine , some of the dvd's were covered in finger marks

and required a quick clean , their quality control could do with tightening up some what.

I found that the sorts of films I wanted to watch, cultish, rare titles, there was always a long queue and rarely managed to rent any of them, so I just stopped using lovefilm.

I use the Tesco Lovefilm franchise and have a long list of films which I have reserved and have had on reserve for a number of years and they haven't turned up yet - my complaints have got me nowhere

They have had a dispute with Universal for a while.

I find them quite good to be honest. I watch about 4-6 films per week from them.

Where else could I rent Mumsy Nanny Sonny and Girly?! They have a huge range of films, don't grumble about late send back, don't charge for missing discs, replace faulty discs straightaway.

    It's a pretty brilliant service.

I also gave up after the 'cheap' period was over. I cannot believe how some people treat DVDs - it's not HARD to pick them up and down without smudging, scratching or god knows what, but disc after disc arrived looking as though it had been rubbed on someone's unwashed hair and then dragged through a hedge. Extraordinary.

    Bad luck.

However, personally, in three years of 4 discs a month - I've had trouble with just 4 discs.

And I've seen a heck of a lot of films I wouldn't otherwise have access to.

Tonight, we watched the Brit B-movie classic Smokescreen - I'd been looking for that for years!

Oh rats, I would've liked to have seen that! I got several good foreign language films from them, but all the British oldies I'd listed never came, so I guess I lost faith.

I've found the trick is to be careful about which films in your list you give top priority to.

The main gripe I have with them is they seemed to lose the rights to most TV shows (all the Network stuff, for example) after the transfer from Amazon to LoveFilm. I have to buy my old TV shows - then flog them on Ebay. It's only a small inconvenience, and the range of available titles, the price and the handy don't-have-to-leave-my computer-to-rent-'em nature of the service, more than makes it worth while...

Yes some of the disks are pretty tatty, but I find the service pretty good really. When the odd disk goes AWOL they don't conduct a Spanish Inquisition style enquiry and quickly send out another title or replacement

I got a copy of "Plague Dogs", and the disc was rotten, would only play on the PC, and I've got 4 dvd players in the house.

In regards to getting the movies, I started with a list of around 200 and it's now wittled down to 12, so now, more than ever, I'm actually getting the movies I want. Though some choices are available to watch online, but you can't have an actual physical copy, which it weird.

Quite impressed with the amount of movies, and their quality, I can watch via their player though, just wish I could filter all the tv shows out of the selection. Has anybody else used the online service?

The also sell DVDs released by "Network" but don't rent them out, so they must have a dispute with Network too.

Network don't let anyone rent their dvds. I assume their sales figures aren't very high and the profit margins on boxsets of forgotten 1960s tv series must be fairly minimal
