for that, dpg. That's on my list, now
One of my favourite themes, too.
Fantastic news chums.
The latest Moviemail monthy newsletter says that Network will be releasing this 6 part 1960 Anthony Newley series in the spring
Having only ever seen two episodes myself this is brillant surreal comedy ( not that I'm biased)
Well that's made my year ( so far ).
for that, dpg. That's on my list, now
One of my favourite themes, too.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if they also included some other Anthony Newley UK tv appearances (1959 - 1962) on the DVD set (the ATV specials etc, which do exist in the archives - excerpts are on YouTube....)
Ah, wonderful. Big smile on my face. Perhaps that Merkin film could make an appearance at some point as well. And Mr Quilp ...
Brilliant news, indeed. Another great surprise from Network. The first episode was shown on the equally beloved TV Heaven in 1992, with an introduction from it's presenter Frank Muir. Una Stubbs was one of the stars, I remember.
I also love the theme tune, which was either based on or reworked for Anthony Newley's hit Bee-Bom. But I first heard it in Children's programme Vision On, during the sequences where the mad scientist made shapes with the painted tyres of his bicycle (please tell me I'm right).
Tony is pictured here with writers, Sid Green (left) & Dick Hills:
I hope the DVD includes an image gallery with all of these:

Sid Green and Dick Hills also wrote for Morecambe and Wise.
I have obituaries of all the gentlemen in that picture as I was an avid collector in the 1990s. Sid died just one month before Tony.
A totally unique TV prog, that I used to watch without fail. Way ahead of its time and thoroughly enjoyable. Anthony Newley, one of my all time favourites I used to look out for him as a child as he always made me laugh. Great talent.
Now uo for pre-order on Amazon
...and yes I will be buying this as soon as it's released![]()

Excellent news, I think that I saw all the episodes. I'm not sure but I think it used to go out on Saturday evenings. It was certainly innovative and offbeat, amazing to think that it's 50 years ago.

1) I can't stand Anthony Newley
2) Having seen the opening episode some years ago at an archive tv event, I'll be buying this immediately......extraordinary and groundbreaking show.
Square that circle......
No he's just a man of quite good taste ( well almost bearing in mind point 1 ! )
People who were not around in 1959/1960 just don't appreciate how Anthony Newley was like a breath of fresh air at the time - challenging the deference of the 1950s with new attitudes that were to take hold in the 1960s - the man was a genius ! (as well as being a great singer.....)
Have ordered this. And I wasn't around at the time but absolutely love Anthony Newley as a singer and really enjoyed his performance in the film Sweet November.
Thankfully someone has upped the first episode (broadcast in the C4 event TV Heaven some years ago) to YouTube. I'd not seen an episode before and I must say it was rather odd but strangely compelling, I look forward to seeing the rest.
Cover now, for IMHO the release of the year, up at Network and for those of us lucky enough to be in travelling distance of the South Bank there will be a special screening on the 11th AugustI do like the analogy with The Prisoner in the blurb.
I expect to see a good many of you there
