It's great, great news! We've been waiting for a DVD of So Long at the Fair for a long time and we're finally getting it on 14th Feb. from Spirit Entertainment (+Strawberry Media? )

In addition to the other five Dirk DVDs coming from Strawberry and this one....Optimum is listed as releasing Dirk's The Gentle Gunman (incorrectly titled The Gentleman Gunman ) on 7th March. See HMV for information on TGG although I can't confirm this. I'm a little worried that the title is incorrect.

    http://hmv.com/hmvweb/simpleMultiSea...mitSearch.y=18

Optimum was also supposed to be releasing The Spanish Gardener but cannot due to copyright, with Strawberry Media / Spirit Entertainment releasing it instead on 14 February. It's not unusual for online sellers to be behind in the changes re: DVD releases, so fingers crossed both titles are indeed coming out.

Thanks so much Mr.T for spotting it.

    Best,

    Barbara

    Great news, especially for Barbara.

I am a fan of both stars and have regretted missing the film on TV.
Particularly looking forward to the scene with the Penny Farthing!:

More pictures here (Rex Features this time):

So Long at the Fair (27 images)

All of which will be on the DVD, with any luck.

To find The Gentle Gunman on HMV, you have to type in The Gentleman Gunman...but it does say The Gentle Gunman on the DVD cover.

Lovely music in this film. And anything with Jean Simmons has to be good.

Excellent news ... So Long At The Fair is great favourite of mine ... a wonderfully clever mystery-thriller.

I believe the DVD cover will say The Gentle Gunman and that the incorrect title was typed in by a young clerk who doesn't know the film. Or at least I hope so for the sake of sales.

    Hi, Cornershop,

Many thanks for the splendid photo of Jean Simmons! Also for the link to the SLATF pics at Rex. It's a shame Rex only shows thumbnails. It's like looking in the window of a closed candy shop.

    Nice chatting as always,

    Barbara

You can save pictures by right clicking on the mouse and 'save as' onto your computer (my pictures, for instance). If you want to increase the size of the image use 'control +. To reduce image use control -.

    Hello, Tavistock,

Thanks so very much for taking the time to help out. I'd forgotten about increasing the image. Very helpful! I wish there was also a way to copy the pic in its increased size.
See how women are never satisfied?

    Much appreciated.

Making pictures larger is always quite limited. If you make them too large they often quite quickly begin to break down and show their pixels as small squares. Diagonal lines become more jagged. How much you can do it depends on the detail that is in the original picture.

There are various image editing tools that can help you, some are free, some charge a small amount. (I use IrFanView) Or you can store the picture in PhotBucket and enlarge it in there and then download it again

Nursery Rhyme Illustration by Dorothy M. Wheeler, published circa 1916

Hello again, Barbara. I meant to post this on your recent birthday, but forgot:

From the increasingly popular Mary Evans Library, which contains many treasures.

One of "several variations" included on its Wikipedia page: Oh Dear! What Can the Matter Be?:

O dear, what can the matter be?
Dear, dear, what can the matter be?
O dear, what can the matter be?
Johnny's so long at the fair.

He promised he'd buy me a fairing should please me,
And then for a kiss, oh! he vowed he would tease me,
He promised he'd bring me a bunch of blue ribbons,
To tie up my bonny brown hair.

    Hi, Cornershop,

Many thanks for this. Dorothy Wheeler's illustration is charming.

The film's title So Long at the Fair, from Anthony Thorne's novel, must have rung a bell with film goers, who would have caught the connection between 'Johnny' in the popular nursery rhyme and Vicky's brother Johnny who'd gone missing at the Paris World Fair. Interesting, aren't they, all these connections.

Again, thank you. Birthday gifts after the event are even better.

    Nice chatting,

    Barbara

Thanks for spotting that change of date!

So Long at the Fair will be released then on the same day, 14 March, as Simba and The Singer Not the Song.

Really?! I had no knowledge that THE SINGER NOT THE SONG was to be released. Thanks for the (potentially) great news. Who's releasing it?
