I knew about it, and I'm a British person. It was certainly debated in the broadsheet press at the time, and the Melon Farmers website covered the issue in depth complete with citations from the relevant legislation.
As far as I'm aware, until this amendment the only visual material that was illegal to possess was anything depicting actual sexual activity involving children. No-one minded this (apart from paedophiles, obviously), because it was easy to define this material in legal terms. Essentially, it was a recording of a crime being committed, whereas the problem with this new legislation is that it seems much less clear-cut. That said, they do allow for people having legitimate reasons to possess such material, which presumably lets archives and museums off the hook.

When Butler's actions on the video were noticed he was banned from the FA Cup game at Old Trafford and recieved a lifetime ban from Crawley Town FC.
Butler, who lives in Crawley, pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive or insulting words with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress under the Public Order Act.
He is expected to be sentenced later this afternoon at Crawley Magistrates Court.
