RENOWN B MOVIE FAN CLUB LETTER
    MARCH 2011

    Dear B Movie Fans

I start this months letter with my thoughts on our first release for this month THE CHALLENGE. Sadly this film was illegally pirated and distributed by another company – and released in a terrible level of quality. I hope club members and film fans alike will be pleased to see this film finally released officially and in its proper restored and re-mastered state.
Jayne Mansfield stars in this film The Challenge nicely shot, it runs at a good pace. Written and Directed by John Gilling the film was made to be suitable for the USA or made American style? Even down to Mansfield's American car. The film is dark at times showing the gangsters violent nature, Antony Quayle is excellent and went to fulfil a career in films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Guns of Naveronne etc good location shooting including some great stream train footage all shot at Longmoor military camp Hampshire. Sixties cars, lorries
and even a trolly bus make for nostalgic viewing. The picture quality is excellent unlike the appalling illegal version released under its American title "it takes a thief"
by Orbit communications. Challenge is a must for fans of sixties crime noir cinema.

Our second release for March is THAT WOMAN OPPOSITE
American Phylis Kirk and Irishman Dan O Herlihystar in this 1957 Monarch production along with our own Wilfred Hyde-White, Petula Clark and "ssch you know who" William Franklyn. Set in France and London the film is nicely penned and Directed by Compton Bennet. The who dunnit crime noir keeps the viewers interest with its twists and turns it keeps you guessing as to who is the killer. The picture quality is extremely good with original music from Stanley Black

And our final release for March is BROKEN MELODY Made in 1934 this Twickenham Studios production reminds one of "les mis" directed by Bernard Vorhaus it has many fine points. The photography of Sydney Blythe is very interesting given that at the time zoom lenses did not exist , the sequence shot at the back of the humble apartments must have been considered bold or very arty with its panning and tilting. John Garrick sings and acts well and it seems that he should have gone on to bigger and better things. Merle Oberon on loan for this film shows early star quality even if her role was a little sugary again Margot Grahame in a role that must have been a little risque at the time , sadly she didn't go on to scale any great heights. Considerable work has been carried out on the master and the result is excellent.

    The Broken Melody sounds unmissable!

In a nutshell The Broken Melody is the tale of a composer who kills his wife’s lover and is sentenced to a lengthy term on Devil’s Island as a result. He escapes and so takes the only logical approach to such events: he composes an opera about them.
