RENOWN B MOVIE FAN CLUB LETTER
APRIL2011
Dear B Movie Fans
Firstly you will be pleased to know that following the tremendous response for our “3 for £10” Offer for our club members we have decided to extend this offer to this month , more details below.
I start this months newsletter with our first release for April, which is the long awaited “Assignment Redhead”. A Butchers 1956 production starring American leads Richard Denning and Carole Mathews. Was the idea to make the film more saleable in the USA ? Or to make a British film more American ? A bit of both I would think... Its a story of murder , counterfeit money and international crime with a pinch of Nazis . Our Brit Ronald Adam is the bad guy - (funny how Brits are the bad guys in American films these days!! ) Ronald Adam featured in 148 productions his last in 1978 just a year before his death in 1979 . Quite a good little feature with picture and sound of good quality after some extensive restoration. This film receiveed a record number of votes from our ‘Vote For Release’ campaign!
Our second title for April is Broken Blossoms. This 1936 Twickenham production Produced by Julius Hagen, who put together a fine team of technicians . Hagen a German called upon several countrymen Hans Brahm Director , Curt Courant Photography then on screen Dolly Haas and our own master of the scissors Ralph Kemplen. Comparisons are made to the DW Griffith version which seem unnecessary. The early model work is not the best but enjoy this fine but not "pc" production. The picture and sound have been restored to a very good quality for a title of this age.
And our third release for April is another Double Bill Breaking Point / Man From Tangier BREAKING POINT is A 1961 Butchers production made at Walton Studios. Peter Reynolds plays a 'nar do well' nephew of a successful printing company owner. His marriage to Johanna Dunham - who went to star in the series Van Der Valk - is on the rocks, his work at the printing firm is rather mundane until a small Eastern state "Lalvador" wanting plates made for their currency is the target of hostile forces. Reynolds is set up by the spies meanwhile Dermot Walsh of Richard The Lionheart fame closes in on Reynolds wife...typical b feature of the era, picture and sound of good quality.
The second Feature on The Double Bill is MAN FROM TANGIER where Our action starts in Tangier with a murder and a robbery. Voss (Martin Benson) one of the master crooks is after the thief who stole the plates and Michele ( Lisa Gastoni ) his unwilling moll is sent to retrieve them - enter Collins (Robert Hutton) an American stunt man who whilst having a haircut his coat is accidentally switched which puts him right in the middle of the intrigue..Good shots of Victoria station, Humber hawks etc The story moves at a good pace and the picture and sound are of good quality.
And Finially our new newsletter section “Looking For…”
Miss IT Hutty of Hull, East Yorkshire is Looking for Danger Within 1959 , 101 mins a Colin Lesslie production for British Lion starring Richard Todd , Richard Attenborgh Bernard Lee and many more fine british actors. A drama set in an Italian prisoner of war camp during ww2 it was eleased by Luminere Pictures in 1993 on VHS and is owned now I believe by Canal Plus Pictures I will find out if they have any intention of re releasing.
