I watched this recently - there's some good performances (though the three young female leads all seemed miscast to me, certainly compared to the more recent version) but it does suffer from the 'two episode too long syndrome' that blighted a lot of drama of the period. Worth watching for Michaels Aldridge and Williams though.

Judi Dench and Michael Aldridge were good in this version of Love In A Cold Climate. But then Judi Dench is good in everything she is in.

I liked it better than the more recent version- good to see it get a legit release, which I will definitely buy.

I know what you mean about dull period drama/novel adaptations from the early 1970s-early 1980s-personally I appreciate an adaptation being true to the novel (especially compared to some of todays examples) but I'd say the props/costume/set department is to blame for the tedium rather than the episodes being too long,an example is the early 1980s 'Mansfield Park'-there simply isn't anything to look at (granted that the role of 'Fanny Price' was seriously miscast and the book itself isn't Austens greatest) it's all large, empty, bland drawing rooms. The 1970s period drama suffered from the lack of on location shooting too IMO
I've not seen the 1980 'Love in a Cold Climate' but enjoyed the more recent version although it felt rather rushed.

One is too rushed while the other was far too leisurely, IMO. One problem is that if you do the two novels, the plot of Love in a Cold Climate runs out a couple of years before that of The Pursuit of Love so the structure is a bit odd. But there were lots of scenes of people telling each other about events which the audience had already seen I wish the two versions could have been merged

I feel the same way about most period drama nowadays-the recent are more visually appealling but I cannot stand script writers messing around with plots! It's probably why I like the 2005 'Bleak House' so much-the only plot changes as such are minor character ommissions (the novel has too many minor characters IMO) and is a more dynamic version than the 1985 version (which is quite good too).
I think I'll put the 1980 'Love in a Cold Climate' on my 'to buy' list or hopefully it'll become available to rent on Lovefilm.

    TVTimes cover, 25-31 October 1980

Featuring Lucy Gutteridge and Rosalyn Landor:

The 'Anglia 21' logo refers to the region's 21st anniversary celebrations.

Inside is a two page article by Lady Diana Mosley (nee Mitford, sister of Nancy). I'll upload it later at Brief Encounter's thread:

    http://www.britmovie.co.uk/forums/lo...mentaries.html

Three pages of stills to enjoy here, including an alternative shot of the cover stars and Behind-the-Scenes photos:

Love in a Cold Climate at Rex Features

Unfortunately, many of the actors aren't named/captioned but I'm sure that's
Peter Howell next to solo shots of Judi Dench and Michael Aldridge on Page 1.

Just started watching the 2001 version again and while I do agree it has good points, it does feel (at three hours) a bit rushed. But these days you just don't get the 'leisurely' dramas which take time to let us get to know the people we're watching.

I still haven't read the book all the way through ...
