Bavaria Media's restored DESPAIR (1978), shown at Cannes Classics this summer, is being released on Blu-ray as well as DVD on the 15th of September 2011. Both discs from Bavaria will have special features.

With grateful thanks to Scraller for finding this trailer of DESPAIR, forthcoming from Bavaria Media on 15 Sept.:

If the trailer doesn't come up, type DESPAIR into "Search" on the screen-right.
At new page, click on Despair at the bottom.
At next page, click on "Trailer" at the top. Quick and easy. A good trailer.

Thanks Barbara, excellent news, I've only seen a couple of minutes of the film, enough to want to buy it. IMO Dirk was at his best in European films.

    Regards

    Paul

    Hi, Paul,

Much agree, and from everything Dirk has written, he felt at his best potential during his later work with European directors.

Given your film experience and reading, you know the story well. When actors are 'seriously handsome,' they often get stuck by studios and the public into repeat typecast roles. Robert Redford talks in depth about that limiting syndrome in the new biography on him. Their creative spirit is dying to break loose, and for the lucky few with money and/or spirit, some do toss it and go free lance like Dirk in the early 60s. Even then, he had to do some films for money before he started his writing career.

Despair is dark, edgy, perhaps suffered from too much editing; yet, the performances are riveting. I have several copies acquired over the years, but I am eager to see the restored Bavaria Media (through EuroVideo) coming 15 Sept. and especially its Special Features, which I will leave as a surprise.

    All best,

    Barbara

    Hi, Moon,

Amazon.de has it on pre-order, and I suspect that other sellers will pick up this hot Blu-ray/DVD as it gets closer to release in September.

Many thanks to Scraller for this link:

Despair - Eine Reise ins Licht [Blu-ray]: Amazon.de: Dirk Bogarde, Andrea Ferreol, Klaus Löwitsch, Bernhard Wicki, Volker Spengler, Rainer Werner Fassbinder: DVD & Blu-ray

The Bavaria Media discs (from EuroVideo) are in ENGLISH and GERMAN, take your choice, and in the original aspect ratio: 1.66:1.

That striking collage cover for the poster and Blu-ray/DVD was done by the German designer Uwe Wandrey.

    Take care,

    Barbara
