Due for release on February 6th 2012 - Adam Smith: The Complete First Series, starring Andrew Keir (one of my favourite Actors) as Adam Smith - http://www.networkdvd.net/product_in...oducts_id=1512 Adam Smith also features Janet Munro's last TV role, Janet played Elizabeth Crichton in five episodes of the first series of Adam Smith.

I have never seen Adam Smith, have any Brit Movie Members ever seen the series.

Long ago /BBC/ITV had to provide an hour of religious programming on a Sunday night IE The God slot.
If I recall correctly the BBC was less imaginative filling their hour with Songs of Praise and talking head vicars etc.
ITV on the other hand were really innovative, they had some cracking programmes in this slot which pondered the human condition, morals, spirituality etc and made it palatable for a progressive audience.

Adam Smith was in this slot as a Sunday night soap opera, from what I remember it was well written and acted with Andrew Keir his usual excellent self, as a man of the cloth who begins the series questioning his life and how he goes forward- when his wife dies...that how I remember it anyway.
So no car chases or blood and guts just 1970s good chatty drama about human issues.

It only lasted one season,I think?
who knows why? maybe Andrew Keir was busy man or maybe it didnt quite fit the remit of the God slot?

Adam Smith ran for two seasons, there were 12 episodes in the first series and 27 episodes in the second series, series one was planned as a thirteen-episode series, though only twelve episodes were ever transmitted, the untransmitted episode (previously unseen) is included on the complete first series 2 DVD set.

Yes the untransmitted episode may/may not have been due to the fact that Janet Munro had to leave the series due to an accident, and it may not have made sense to the running storyline if she was unable to complete? ...just a theory.

Some of it was re shown during the glory days of early Channel 4's reruns of quality elderly programmes.
It still stood up well as far as I can remember and in answer to your original question I don't think you will be disappointed in buying the DVD?

I watched a fair bit of this series when it was originally shown, billy, and my main memory of it was that it was - in good Scottish parlance - dour.

I notice that website says this was "probably Andrew Keirs (sic) highest profile role..."

    So, not Quatermass then...

Yes it does sound like this episode was waiting for the Janet Munro scenes as I believe she was suppose to appear in 9 episodes?

It was in January 1972 when Janet crashed her car after blacking out at the wheel, so that fits with her missing the episode of Adam Smith.

I watched the final episode of the first series of Adam Smith today, i did enjoy watching the first series of Adam Smith (a TV series which i had never seen before), i was impressed by Andrew Keir's performance in the title role of Adam Smith, Kara Wilson and Brigit Forsyth were very good in the roles of Adam's two daughters (Helen and Annie), there were also good performances from Janet Munro (in her final TV role) as Elizabeth Crichton and Tom Conti as Dr. Calvi, i wonder if the second series of Adam Smith will come out on DVD.

Here are some screencaps of Andrew Keir as Adam Smith, also featuring Brigit Forsyth as Annie Smith, Kara Wilson as Helen Smith and Tom Conti as Dr. Calvi, these screencaps were taken from the photo gallery which is the only special feature on the complete first series 2 DVD set of Adam Smith.
