Default Brit-crime - three new titles from Optimum

Howdy all, long time no post. Through you might be interested in some news regarding Optimum's latest British cinema releases. A trio of crime films due out this Monday (11th), the latter two of which are available on DVD for the first time.

Sadly Optimum don't put much in the way of extras on the discs, not a single trailer among the set, but the print quality is great.

I got a sneaky first look at all three discs and my thoughts on the discs and the films are:

Frightened City

The Long Arm

Payroll

Optimum have also announced that they will be releasing Stanley Baker's classic Criminal (1960) at some point in the near future. Aside from this, and of course the superb Hell is a City (1960), which other Brit-crime films from this era come recommended?

Off the top of my head:

The League of Gentlemen
A Prize of Arms
Never Let Go
Brighton Rock
The Blue Lamp
Tiger Bay
The Ship That Died of Shame
Robbery (sadly not on DVD)
Gideon's Day (ditto)
Sapphire (and again)
Nowhere to Go (you guessed...)

Scratch that about 'Robbery' not being on DVD - it's been announced by Optimum for May release!

Payroll aka I Promised to Pay is outstanding!

(and thanks to Play.com: fast shipping, even before the official release-date)

Essex Boys was marketed as a sort of "Lock Stock" wideboy movie. Since it is actually a downbeat and gritty thriller based on fact that was probably a mistake; it certainly didn't make me eager to see it. More's the pity, because this is an intelligent and atmospheric account of the infamous Rettendon Range Rover murders which took place some years ago. Considering how awful most British crime movies are at the moment, it's quite a compliment to say that this one is genuinely watchable even if it's nothing special.
