Default Corruption (Robert Hartford-Davis, 1968)

This rather rare Peter Cushing movie, also starring Sue Lloyd, has recently been released on DVD (with an audio track in English) in Spain via Columbia Tristar Home Video.

Here's some links about it:

Which version is the Spanish one - the English theatrical print or the alternate "Continental" print?

That's great news - I don't think this has even shown up on UK television for 20 years.

Even the novelisation is easier to find than the actual film.

Copies of both versions of this film are available on ebay (although one assumes these are bootlegs and of poor quality).

One would hope that the new DVD release will be a better print and copy to the one's you currently see on ebay. I bought a copy from ebay some years ago, the quality wasn't that bad, but a bootleg all the same. I have the original film poster at home and the tag line reads "This is not a woman's picture. No women will be allowed in alone"

If no-one else posts beforehand, I'll let you know about print quality as I am waiting on a copy from Espana...

If anyone can enlighten me on the version differences, I'll post about that too. I've only ever had a version I got from (I think) the Sci-Fi Channel, years ago.

SPOILER ALERT

Basically the scene in which Cushing murders the prostitute in her Soho bedroom was shot in 2 different versions for different markets.

In the UK release version the woman is clothed and the killing, apart from the initial stabbing, occurs offscreen.

In the alternate version (released under the title Laserkiller in France and possibly elsewhere) the woman is played by a different actress, is topless, and we see Cushing smearing blood all over her breasts and then starting to hack off her head on-screen. It is really Cushing doing all of this - not a double. The narrative of the scene also differs - in the Continental version they struggle after he prepares to leave without paying her whereas he pays her in the UK version and then frets whilst she is on the phone before stabbing her. The result of these changes is to make the victim seem more of "a bitch" in the Continental version.

According to a letter in Video Watchdog there's also a 3rd version of the scene in which the victim is even more conservatively dressed.

Unfortunately guys I've now seen this.

The Good news:

Print quality is quite good. Not perfect but blows the Ebay dupes away. It's an English language print with the title Corruption. Both English and Spanish language options. Fullscreen but framing looks fine (presumably it should be 1:1.66).

The Bad News:

Its cut. The entire Soho prostitute scene is completely missing. The film runs only 83m in pal when it should run 87m. It's not clear to me why this is missing unless this print originally had the "Contintental version" and it has been removed for censorship reasons. The British version of this scene is faily mild.

I was pretty disappointed with this as otherwise the quality is fine.
