Me neither ... he was OK in Department S when he wasn't centre-stage but when he got his own series it was too OTT for me.

Both series will probably be going cheap in a double box-set one day.

This is one ITC show i will gladly pass on. Watched a couple of episodes recently, and they are really bad, just don't stand the test of time.

I agree Bats that he was ok in Dept S, but the problem with Jason King is that he is the main focus of attention. The novelty had worn thin.

Have to agree. Department S was shot on 35mm while Jason King was filmed on 16mm and it shows. I rather like Department S, particularly the fantastic opening theme music and the intereaction between all the main characters. When King went it alone in the spin-off Jason King, I did feel that character had gone a little OTT. I mean in almost every scene he's either smoking or knocking back yet another Scotch or chatting up women. Lucky bugger....

I seem to remember Peter Wyngarde was caught with a lorry driver but not sure how true it was

According to the IMDB, this was the case and his career was subsequently ruined as he was blacklisted for a while IIRC and had to seek work abroad to make ends meet. Shame really, as I've always liked him. You only have to see him in "Night of the Eagle" to see that had a certain screen presence not to mention that voice....

I suppose Dept S was the original "X Files" of its day. The stories all had a fantasy surreal element about them in a similar way that "The Avengers" had and the fact that it was, as you point out, shot on 35mm gives it all a hyper clarity that is pleasing to watch. Jason King on the other hand showed a rather glum, grainy and underlit 16mm 1970s that is actually far from glamorous in my opinion. I bought the Jason King boxset that came out on Network nearly two years ago after being pleased with the Dept S boxset I had bought from the same company. I managed to get through one and a half episodes before throwing the towel in, for me Dept S is still watchable but Jason King has not really stood the test of time IMO.

Is that the same thing as cottage industry?

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.
