New Dvd Titles - Britmovie

DD Video have released the following -

FOXHOLE IN CAIRO 1960
FREEDOM RADIO 1941
NURSE EDITH CAVELL 1939 (I think this is actually a US film)
THE PURPLE PLAIN 1954
THEY WERE NOT DIVIDED 1950
THE DAY WILL DAWN 1942
THE FLEMISH FARM 1943
FOR FREEDOM 1940

BUT, according to the catalogue they are not available in the shops - mail order only!

Also the same catalogue lists MASK OF DUST and the 1937 Stanley Holloway film THE VICAR OF BRAY as just out but as they're listed elsewhere I'm assuming they'll be available 'over the counter'.

I'm tempted by FOXHOLE (I'm a big JRL fan), but the only other movie in that list I'm interested in, THE PURPLE PLAIN is being released on DVD in R1 by MGM next month, so I'll get that from PlayUSA (who are only charging £7.99 for it)

Lewis Gilbert's SINK THE BISMARK! is getting a DVD re-release in July, as part of the 'Studio Classic' series.

An Inspector calls(1954) was released 04/04/05 after many delays.
And the Pete & Dud original version of 'Bedazzled' is due for release in July..

There are a couple of new Hammer releases. Stolen Face, excellent film with Paul Hendreid and Mask of Dust with Richard Conte.

If anyone gets Sink the Bismarck! (1960), take note of the Captain of the "Prince of Wales". Played by Esmond Knight, a great actor who joined the Navy for the duration. He was an gunnery officer (anti-aircraft) on the Prince of Wales when she and the Hood met the Bismarck. About the last thing Esmond saw clearly was H.M.S. Hood being blown up by one of the first salvoes from the Bismarck. A shell from the next salvo landed close to him. He lost one eye completely and lost most of the sight in his other eye.

But he didn't let that slow him down much and he went back to acting, sometimes in some quite adventurous roles.

Steve Thanks for that. Somewhere, I have on audio tape (recorded years ago from Radio 4, I think) Esmond describing exactly what happened on the Prince of Wales on that fateful day. Absolutely fascinating, tragic and momentous all wrapped up together.

I think that Jon Pertwee served on HMS Hood and was very lucky not to be aboard when it was sunk. I might be wrong but I believe he was ill and, along with several others, was left on shore when it set out on it's last voyage.

Given the daft characters he played in The Navy Lark on the old steam radio, if they were based on his time in H.M.S. Hood it's amazing she lasted as long as she did.

You're right LPC. My old Religious Ed teacher served with Jon P and I think they both missed the fatal sailing. Teacher later asked Jon to record a special Rememberance Day message for our year's Nov 11th assembly one time. He did it, on old (huge) reel-to-reel tape and we were all in awe that our teacher knew Doctor Who! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif[/img]

The tactics worked and you could have heard a pin drop in that assembly ; ne'er were a group of small boys ever so attentive I believe... [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif[/img]

The HMV publicity people have announced that they plan to release a 10 DVD boxed set of Powell & Pressburger films on July 11th. See PaPAS site for more details.

Titles expected are:
* A Matter of Life and Death
* The Red Shoes
* The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
* Black Narcissus
(2005 digitally remastered version which premiered at Cannes)
* A Canterbury Tale
* 49th Parallel
* The Battle of the River Plate
* Ill Met By Moonlight

* They're a Weird Mob
(First time on DVD in the UK)
