I'm so sad (and angry) that we won't get to see TV Gold like this and heartbroken for those who worked on it. Once again, I say with all seriousness, that I am relying on the Afterlife to supply us with what's been lost. It's our only hope!

Here is TVTimes' promotion of the tragic programme:

Of course, Jeremy Brett went on to play the violin-playing Sherlock Holmes two decades later. Quite a coincidence.
Jeremy bears the most extraordinary resemblance to Patrick Mower in this image ... don't you think?

What else was on ITV in that region? Anything there that stands out apart from our subject?

Broadcast 29th January 1966, when The Overlanders' bland version of Michelle was No. 1

I'd like to dedicate this post to fellow Sixties TV fan Harbottle, if only for his earlier use of the old-fashioned word 'vexing'!
Great post again Corner; thanks for the shots from TV Times, agree with you about similarity of Jeremy Brett looking like Patrick Mower; in fact the likeness is striking. If you screw your eyes up tight; have you noticed the cast list for Interpol Calling at 11-20 features Leonard Sachs, is this the same man of Good Old Days fame; surely it must be.... or are my eyes deceiving me.

My pleasure, Brigger. Glad you agree about their similarity. Yes, I've seen Leonard acting before, certainly in the horror film Taste of Fear (aka Scream of Fear and possibly The Human Jungle. This link proves it!: Leonard Sachs

I remember he was married to Eleanor Summerfield but am still not sure if he was related to Andrew or presenter John Sachs.

Not according to Wikipedia - sons Robin and Toby ...

Exciting news about Mystery and Imagination but a shame the Jeremy Brett episode is missing; and The Canterville Ghost with, erm, Bruce Forsyth!

I know about Leonard's sons through IMDB but he might still be an uncle or cousin of Andrew and John. Sorry for goning off topic there.

Exciting and, at the same time, devastating.

Default Episode 2 - 'The Body Snatcher'

To end what's been one of my most depressing days at the Forum, with a series of ignored and deleted posts,
it's fairly apt that I should sign out with another tragically lost episode.

This is from the 5th February 1966 edition of the TVTimes and features an interview with Ian Holm:

Significantly, the progamme followed The Avengers, which has not only been repeated many times since but is available in different boxsets in (I'm sure) excellent quality - if only we could say the same for all the shows of that time.

One series from that period which has been given a boxset release is The Power Game and, would you believe it, the first episode Ian Holm appeared in, Late Via Rome, was shown just TWO DAYS after The Body Snatcher. I don't know he feels about it now but what would Ian have thought then if he heard that of his two appearances that week one would survive and one wouldn't? I saw that Power Game episode a few days ago actually - good but grainy.

You'll also notice in that listing one of Morecambe & Wise's shows was on too, with guest Jackie Trent, who had recently had a No. 1 with Where Are You Now (My Love)? (brilliant) and was also Mrs. Tony Hatch. I know Eric & Ernie had a show called Two Of A Kind around this time but it doesn't seem to be the same series and, again, I have to wonder if it exists.

Will things get better in the morning?

Default Episode 3 - 'The Fall of The House of Usher'

From the TVTimes again, beginning 12th February 1966, the day the show was broadcast:

Two of my favourites there, Denholm Elliott and Susannah York. The shows I've missed in my life - I was 10 months old then.

It seems David Buck was the star - and host - of Mystery and Imagination for the first two seasons. Interesting. I only remember him from the Bryan Forbes' film Deadfall, where he had one or two scenes with Michael Caine. Sadly, David died when he was 52 and it was in one of his obituaries that I discovered he was married to the lovely Madeline Smith. As I trawl through these precious archives of the past, I wonder what else I'll find for you (on the show and, hopefully, David Buck as well)?

I hope you like the pictures of Morecambe & Wise and Millicent Martin. This would have been BEFORE her marriage to Norman Eshley, DURING the one to Ronnie (Say Wonderful Things To Me) Carroll and AFTER her 'stint' in That Was The Week That Was. She's had a life!

Thanks Jaycad, and for your earlier reply. It says 10 at IMDB, but the first two series compised twelve episodes. All very mysterious.

As well as Mystery and Imagination, I'd like to see his storytelling appearances in Jackanory (1971).

Default leper episode?

Was there a Mystery and Imagination story that involved lepers?

That rings a bell somewhere - does anybody know which one or am I confusing it with something else?

going by the titles of the missing episodes there's only two that could possibly have been mistaken for involving lepers-'the listener'(which is thye story of the ghost of a man hideously disfigured by cancer) nad 'the body snatchers' f(for obvious reasons!
here's a link to an episode list

David Buck was quite a clever bloke. His later career was spent adapting classical novels for the radio. The last time I saw him on TV was in 1983 version of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. It was the small part of Fanny Price's real father. Sadly, Mr Buck's looks had detiorated dramatically. I'm not surprised he died so young. To judge by his appearance then he had over-indulged in alcohol and food.

If I could find a place that makes me feel like Tiffany's
