I've got mine too - an excellent set. There's some fantastic London streets footage in Pool Of London - gotta love those trams!

Default The London Box Set, released today

Saturday's Times
Nigel Kendall:

This fascinating box set will probably delight social historians just as much as cineastes.

The four feature films here - POOL OF LONDON, THE YELLOW BALLOON, SPARROWS CAN'T SING, THE SMALL WORLD OF SAMMY LEE - span 12 years, starting in 1951.

Though their casts include the likes of Anthony Newley, it's the city that is the star.

There is something in the British psyche that drives us away from celebrating our capital, and each of the films here wallows in the seedy peripheries of London, from bombed-out Elephant and Castle (YELLOW BALLOON) through to the confusion of the East End at a time of new immigration and construction (SPARROWS CAN'T SING).

Although they struggle with limited budgets and poor scripts, all of these films have their moments, and they are topped off with a re-release of the brilliant James Mason documentary THE LONDON NOBODY KNOWS and the eccentric musical LES BICYCLETTES DE BELIZE.

The whole set is capital, simply capital.

Maurice - I agree with the review 100%. It's a terrific set and well worth the money.

Couln't have said it better, a fabulous set and the print of Sammy Lee... is worth the price alone ( but then I might be slightly biased )

Default Box set confusion

Hi

The BBC Radio 4's Film Programme featured Pool of London which they said was part of a new DVD boxed set also including The Flesh Is Weak, The Frightened City, Night In the City.
What is this boxed set? It's not The London Collection.

The London Collection includes:
The Small World of Sammy Lee
Sparrows Can't Sing
Les Bicyclettes de Belsize
The London Nobody Knows
Pool of London
The Yellow Balloon

Maybe this other boxed set hasn't been released yet. A lot get delayed, or cancelled. Maybe the people on The Film Programme got it wrong

I've had 'The Flesh Is Weak' on order for months. The release date keeps getting put back. Maybe that's why.

I'm almost 99% sure that the stand up comic who opens LONDON IN THE RAW is an old friend: Peter Reeves (Saskia Reeves' dad and a talented songwriter in his own right) but I can't confirm from credits. Anyone else confirm?

The Flesh is Weak, They Made Me A Fugitive and Taste of Excitement were announced by Odeon as a Best of British Crime Box Set originally due for release on 20 July 09 but now the release date is 10 October 2010!

Meanwhile, They Made Me A fugitive is playing on Movies4Men.

Could anyone who has the London Collection DVD set, do a screen grab of the cinema (showing Naked as Nature Intended) that appears in the opening credits of The Small World of Sammy Lee?
