Default Vera Lynn Collection: New UK DVD release (Region 2)

Vera Lynn Collection: New UK DVD release (Region 2)

Features the three rare British musical films starring Vera Lynn made during World War Two:

Rhythm Serenade (d. Wellesley, 1943)

We'll Meet Again (d. Brandon, 1943)

One Exciting Night (d. Forde, 1944).

To be released August 31st 2009.

Cast: Vera Lynn, Patricia Roc, Irene Handl, Jimmy Jewel, Richard Murdoch
Publisher: Sony Pictures
Format: DVD B&W (3 DVD set)
Cat No: CDRP8978

'Rhythm Serenade' is a patriotic musical romance in which Vera Lynn stars as a young teacher who accepts an offer to run a day school for the employees of a munitions factory.

In 'We'll Meet Again', Lynn plays a young dancer trying to make it in London during World War II. She discovers that people like her singing voice too, and although she is reluctant to sing at first, she finally does and becomes a star. This musical is loosely based upon the career of the British "Forces' Sweetheart" Vera Lynn, the popular BBC radio singer who spent much time entertaining the troops in London. It all begins when she falls in love with a Scottish soldier who breaks her heart when he jilts her in favour of her best friend. Following the break up, she decides to leave London and spend her time entertaining troops all over Europe.

'One Exciting Night' is a musical farce in which Lynn plays a would-be singer desperate at having a shot to impress producer Stewart with her abilities. Her chance comes at a benefit concert that is also the scene of an attempted kidnapping of Stewart by a gang after a priceless Rembrandt. She thwarts the rascals and wins over the audience with her singing.

MrT
Shame because they could probably have got quite a bit of publicity if they'd released it on time.

Well, it's not terribly exciting if that's what you mean To be honest, if you have the other two, I would imagine you could probably live without this unless you're a huge fan of either Donald Stewart of Mary Clare (who only gets a couple of scenes ). Vera is a good singer but really not much of an actress.

Are the prints good?

It appears that We'll Meet Again (d. Brandon, 1943) is the best one to go for, if you just want one Vera film...not too surprising Vera can't act, as she never had any training in that aspect....

I've only watched One Exciting Night so far - there are some screencaps here. The print looked fine to me though my standards aren't terribly high
