Default Winston Churchill: The Valiant Years

At long last !!!!! To be released on September 7th (PAL). It's advertised on Movie Mail but I'm not sure at this point if it's one of their exclusives. It's a marvellous documentary.

Yes, I pre-ordered mine from MovieMail UK a month or so ago. But I don't know if I'll ever get it, as by September 7th, the Royal Mail may be on a national strike. It certainly looks like things are going that way at the moment. I really can't see how MovieMail can send me this box set if all the postal workers are out on strike. But I don't suppose they'll have any trouble taking the £26:99 out of my credit card account for it.

I watched this series every Saturday night in 1961, when I was 14 and thought it was marvellous. It's certainly got a lot going for it, what with Richard Rodgers award winning score; narration by Gary Merrill and Sir Winston's words spoken by Richard Burton.

They could have released this for the home market years ago, instead of waiting until the Royal Mail go on strike. Now, all us who have pre-ordered it may not get it anyway...even though we've paid for it.

Nobody ends like they started out.

I've just had a look around and it's not mentioned on amazon.co.uk; HMV Online or Play.com, so it must be a MovieMail UK exclusive.

Just to let you know that we only charge your card when the DVDs are despatched. At the moment there's no confirmation of a national strike, but if it occurs it should only mean a delay of a couple of days.

Thanks, Dan. I had visions of it disappearing en-route. At least, if there is a national strike, you can't really despatch it until it's over, as who at Royal Mail would there be to collect it? We shall just have to wait and see what transpires and hope for the best. If the worst comes to the worst, I for one would be willing to pay extra for postage for it to be sent to me by special courier, if that could be arranged. I remember back in 1971 when the Royal Mail were out on a national strike for six weeks. I certainly hope it doesn't come to that this time around.

I've just noticed that it has disappeared off the MovieMail UK website. I have emailed them to ask if the September 7th release is still going ahead. I don't know when I'll receive a reply though, what with it being a holiday weekend and all.

Having had no reply by email from MovieMail UK, I phoned them up. They tell me that due to circumstances beyond their control, the September 7th release of Winston Churchill: The Valiant Years has been cancelled. They say it may now come out sometime in 2010. I thought that the announcement of its release was too good to be true.

Nobody ends like they started out.
