Well I arrived into the VHS age a little later than most and my first VCR was a Betamax, which to be perfectly frank was much better picture quality than the early VHS models, and the tapes rarely fouled up. I can't remember the price of blanks for Betamax but they were slightly cheaper than VHS and were always 15 minutes longer than VHS 180 minute ones. A relative had one of those Philips 2000 things with tapes that could record on both sides. It was innovative and the obvious way forward at the time, but like the Betamax it fell by the wayside and VHS was king!

Unfortunately, too often it is marketing that beats innovation

Yes what happened to laser discs too! They were a must have item at one time. Still they're not going to catch me out, my eight track car stereo is a thing of beauty and as long as I don't mind listening to The New Seekers 10cc and Charlie Rich albums all the time I can't see any point in changing to those new fangled cassette tape things! You can't even read the sleeve notes!

I knew I risked massive disappointments like this thread by coming into a Brit Movie forum. I knew you'd talk about wonderful films that aren't available in the USA. I HATE REGION ENCODING. Pardon me if I don't give even lipservice to copyrights when those people enforce NTSCvsPAL and Region encoding as if TransAtlantic travellers would actually buy the same film twice. Grrr. HOBSON'S is definitely at the top of my Region1 Wish List. With about 180 others.
