Default British Films On German Dvd

I've just received the following DVDs (ranked here from worst to best quality), which I ordered from a German website:

Maroc 7 (Marokko 7)
The Rise of Catherine the Great (Katherine die Grosse)
They Met in the Dark (Spionagering M)
Passage Home (Eine Frau Kommt an Bord)
Operation Amsterdam
Dangerous Exile (Im Dienste des Konigs)
Turn the Key Softly (Frauen auf Abwegen)

In general, the quality of all of these discs is a little under par. Next to the DVD releases from such companies as DD Video in the UK and Magna Pacific in Australia, these DVDs are something of a let down. But for those Brit film enthusiasts who are interested enough to consider the 4.99 Euro ticket price acceptible, these discs are worth bearing in mind.

All discs are 4:3 full frame (each looking as though it uses an old TV print as source master) and have optional German and English language options with no subtitles. The worst quality titles, Maroc 7 and The Rise of Catherine the Great, are very grainy and look as though they might have originated from an analogue (even VHS) tape source. By far the worse title is Maroc 7 which is one of the very worst DVD presentations I've seen for some time (again, though I would reiterate that if you really want to see it, then the price is not high enough to put you right off).

The same German company (AmCo Movies) has released other titles in its Classic Movie Collection (all starring Dirk Bogarde):
Simba
Campbell's Kingdom (Gefährliches Erbe)
The Singer, Not the Song (Sommer der Verfluchten)

I have these on order, too, but haven't yet received them, so can't comment on quality.

I haven't found a company website, but I did hit upon this link through a Google search:
http://www.cinefacts.de/dvd/db/studio_list...=194&titel=AmCo

From the list here, I noticed a few other titles of interest:
Tiara Tahiti (Tag der Rache)
Bachelor of Hearts (Mit dem Kopf durch die Wand)
Madonna of the Seven Moons (Madonna der sieben Monde0
Whirlpool (Die schwarze Lorelei)
That's Your Funeral (Ein Begräbnis erster Klasse)

There's a German DVD of Hitchcock's Blackmail (1929) which includes the silent and the sound versions plus Hitch doing sound screen test with Anny Ondra. That's very good quality. It's on the ArtHaus label.

I see they have Whirlpool (1959), "Passage Home" (1955), "Bachelor of Hearst" (1959), "Tiara Tahiti" (1962) and Madoona of the Seven Moons (1944) too.

Hello, Liger...or Anyone:

Two questions: How was the quality on the German AmCo DVDs of Simba, Campbell's Kingdom, and Singer Not the Song?

I see that jpc - Music Ã* la carte - Musik, Filme und Bücher offers the above Bogarde titles plus:

Gentle Gunman (1952) AmCo
Originaltitel: Gentle Gunman (1952) AmCo
Sprache: D

2. Does "Sprache: D" mean that the film retains its original English dialogue but has subtitles only in German? or that it is dubbed in German with no choice of English audio or subtitle?

Thanks,

Barbara

"Sprache: D" means it has a German audio (language)

Subtitles will be indicated by Untertitel or just U

Dear Stefan :)

Oh, too bad. I was looking forward to Gentle Gunman on DVD.

Wake up, AmCo. There are English-speaking viewers waiting in line for that _English_ film.

Best,

Barbetta :)

They also have 'Murder!', An early sound Hitchcock with Herbert Marshall and Norah Baring, featuring the original British version, an alternate extended ending, plus the recast German language version...another excellent package. Try Amazon.de for either of the above.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

The German hammer DVD's are also far better to the UK ones as far as extras goes.
