It's lovely to see an R2 DVD release of Dirk Bogarde's "Victim" (1961) by Network. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clapping.gif[/img]
This ground-breaking film is once again available in R2 along with the original trailer and more important, the thirty minute TV interview, "Dirk Bogarde in Conversation." The interview was filmed at Bogarde's home prior to the release of "Victim." In the interview, Bogarde discusses his career and Hunted (1952), Doctor in the House (1954), Song Without End (1960), and Victim (1961), a film on a "controversial topic" which, he points out, would have been difficult to make much earlier, given the homophobic laws in the UK at the time.

Apparent throughout the conversation are Bogarde's keen intelligence and droll wit, which come close to tying the interviewer in knots but then gently released by a bemused Bogarde. Remember this interview the next time you read one of Bogarde's best-selling volumes, all fifteen of them.

As a postscript to Network's recent release of the earlier Granada special edition of "Victim": apparently Network has a five-year agreement with Granada/Carlton, now merged, to have access to and the release rights to some/all? of the G-C ITV television library holdings and their "Rank, Romulus and Rohauer film collections." So we can look forward to more titles forthcoming from Network. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif[/img]

If anyone knows more details or has corrections on the above, I would most appreciate hearing them.

I'm puzzled as to why exactly DD and Network are releasing the same Granada titles, such as Green for Danger.

A good question, JamesM. I'd like to know also. In light of Network's agreement with Granada Ventures to have access to the Granada/Carlton Library for five years, Network's print will undoubtedly come from G-C. I'm not sure where the DD Home Entertainment print came from. Unless it is really inferior to the G-C one, I don't see the sense in Network re-releasing "Green For Danger" only five months after the DD release. I notice that DD's version is listed as two minutes longer, but is it really? [from comments, it probably isn't.]

I posted a query at the "Green for Danger" thread. Perhaps someone there will shed some light on this.

Hello, Mulberry,

Much appreciate the added information. Assuming then that Granada Ventures was both the holder and "distributor" of "Victim" (1961), was GV selling "NON exclusive rights" or was it granting licence to Network to release parts of GV's library? Are selling rights different than licence?

Was it GranadaV which earlier gave/sold DD Home Entertainment licence to release its DVD in Nov. 2005?

I'm curious as to where DD got its print from and also why Network would reissue 'Victim' only five months later. Strange are the ways.
